Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week is here! Hear from Ambassador Damien as he talks about his journey and life as an Ostomate.

My journey with Crohn’s disease hasn’t been easy, but it has shaped who I am today. After years of pain, hospital visits, and trying everything to avoid surgery, I eventually became an ostomate, and it turned out to be the thing that gave me my life back.

My stoma didn’t take anything away from me. It gave me energy, freedom, confidence, and a second chance. Today, I share my story to show others that life with Crohn’s or Colitis doesn’t end after surgery; for many of us, it finally begins.

If you’re going through this right now, please know you’re not alone. There is nothing weak about asking for help, choosing surgery, or putting your health first. You are stronger than you think, and you deserve a life without constant pain.

This Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week Ambassador, Owen, shares his journey with the disease and becoming an Ostomate.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2018, and the four years that followed broke me open. The disease was relentless, and the treatments were chaotic. Severe mood swings, sleepless nights, weight gain, acne, and feeling trapped in a body I no longer recognised. When my body rejected a biological drug, it felt like millions of ants were crawling under my skin. I was exhausted, unrecognisable, and completely out of options.

In November 2022, I had a total colectomy and woke up with a stoma, confronting, but it was also the first moment I felt I was getting my life back.

Life didn’t snap back instantly. I rebuilt it slowly, stubbornly, and with a level of resilience I didn’t know I had. Today, I’m running marathons and ultramarathons to remind myself of how far I’ve come and to inspire others to start exercising, no matter their condition.

Having a stoma didn’t limit me; it forced me to grow, adapt, and find strength in places I never would have looked. My journey isn’t defined by illness anymore, but by what I’ve done with my second chance.
