In this session, we address two big questions:

1. How to handle a situation where one feels attacked during a conversation, with the other person attributing their response to stress?

2. Strategies for dealing with resentment and defensive thought loops, which hinder the ability to find middle ground in relationships.

INSIGHT
What we perceive is happening in any given moment isn’t necessarily true (nor good or bad), in fact it’s probably safe to say, it’s rarely ‘true’ - our biases just make it seem that way. How we relate to what is happening determines its effect on us and our mindstate is what determines how we relate to it. Maintaining a calm, clear mindstate is the key to processing challenging moments in a healthy, non-judgmental way. It just takes…

PRACTICE
Just for one day, activate a sharp awareness of your experiences; notice your mind judging them as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, wanted or unwanted etc. Notice the biases and beliefs that influence your thoughts, emotions/feelings, urges and actions and then consciously unhook from anything that isn’t true or helpful. The more you practice unhooking the more peace of mind and vitality you’ll have.

INSIGHT
Being compassionate towards another person can be difficult when you don’t like what they’ve said or done but that is exactly when compassion is needed most. And sometimes that person is ourselves.

PRACTICE
Reflect on the meaning and application of compassion and then reflect on the reality of human nature; that we all say and do things that are agitating and/or sharp from time to time. Compassion is what we need to apply for those moments; a sense of acceptance and forgiveness to relieve the sting

INSIGHT
Your ‘mindstate’ is what directs your behaviour (speech and action) so, if your mindstate is calm then your speech and action will be calm and therefore your relationship experience will also be calm. Conversely, if your mindstate is agitated (resentful, defensive etc) then your speech and action will be agitated and your relationship experience will also be agitated. So it will serve you well to keep your mindstate calm, clear, cheerful, compassionate etc...aligned with how you want your relationship experience to be - with yourself and with others.

PRACTICE
Observe your mindstate for a few days and with non-judgment. Notice how it influences your speech and action (which start as thoughts). If you notice agitation or urges of reactivity, slow yourself down, apply empathy & compassion and bring to mind some more accepting, warm hearted & encouraging thoughts which will flow in to your speech and action.

INSIGHT
When we get triggered it can feel like there’s no space to choose a response, but there is, you just have to practice creating it.

PRACTICE
When you notice strong emotion rising via symptoms such as your body tightening and heating up, racing heart, rapid breath and impulse to react - practice emotional self care by creating a space for your nervous system to settle down so you can regain access to ‘wise mind’ (where your values and rationality are)

> Start by saying to yourself ‘I’m feeling ‘X’ and am not clear minded enough to respond to what is happening’

> Request a pause long enough for you to reconnect to Wise Mind.

> Do a series of long slow breaths particularly focussing on sighing out the exhale. Use it to breathe out the tension in your body and reconnect you to your values.

> The more stirred up you are the longer you’ll need. Keep taking longer breaks if you return and it escalates again.

> Only begin the repair discussion when you’re both calm and clear

INSIGHT:
This describes how I live my life and it’s certainly serving me well!
Living each day as it comes, in alignment with my values which naturally directs how I balance my time, how I connect to what I’m doing & who I’m with. It’s a blueprint for decision making and managing challenges, which I accept are a part of everyday life. I rarely get overwhelmed about uncertainty of the future or bogged down in reliving pains of the past. I’m just living THIS DAY.

I remain flexible and agile which enables me to adjust my sails as life makes shifts out of my control. Since I’ve practiced living this way I’ve felt much more secure and satisfied with my life.

PRACTICE:
Clarify your values and visions to set up your blueprint of behaviour (speech & action) and steps of direction. What does a typical day look like in alignment with this? Stay connected to this each day, living moment by moment and notice the sense of calm that comes with this self assurity.

This week's Q & A question is...

"When my wife and I have an argument and it gets heated, she's usually the one to shut it down, which I hate because I feel she's shutting me down. But I agree, as long as we can talk about it later, but later never comes. She continually fobs me off and I feel even more shut down. And now I'm resentful about all of this and a few other things, but that's for another day."
