April is Autism Acceptance Month, an opportunity to celebrate the talent, innovation and diversity that Autistic people contribute to our community.

It's typically kicked off by World Autism Awareness day on April 2nd, but many Autistic folk and their allies are shifting the focus from 'Awareness' to 'Acceptance'.

Autism is often framed as a 'disorder', and the diagnostic tools and language tend to draw on a deficit-based medical model. This unfortunately frames autism and neurodivergence as something that needs to be cured, solved, or overcome, rather than a difference to be accepted, valued and celebrated for unique ways of being and seeing.

We encourage you to listen to and reflect on the voices and experiences of the actual autistic people and autistic-led organisations (and not just for the month of April)!

Happy International Women's Day!

Celebrating women of all ages, colours and abilities, and the support they provide to all of us.

We all know women who make immense contributions to the wellbeing of others, at all levels of society. Today is an opportunity to recognise the (often unpaid and unacknowledged) value of their presence in our lives. A big thank you to all the awesome chicks out there!

3rd December is International Day of People with Disability 2022

Today is an opportunity to raise awareness about the ongoing barriers to access and inclusion that people with disabilities still face; but it's also a chance to celebrate the successes.

It's been a hard couple of years for most folk, so it's heartening to see, particularly in the NDIS, greater representation of people with disabilities in positions of power, where hopefully they can usher in a more nuanced and supportive approach to supporting all disabled folk.

As part of Mental Health Month, we invite you to be present. To tune in.

Well-meaning people will bang on about 'being in the moment', as if that will solve everything. Anyone who has struggled with their mental health will know it's not that simple. It's become a loaded phrase that lacks nuance.

Tuning in is another way of doing this that carries a little less baggage, and can be scaled up or down as needed. Tune in to your capacity, and acknowledge that that capacity changes day-to-day.

There is a white text box that says: Tuning in means being present. It means being aware of what is happening within you, and in the world around you. Being present by tuning in has been shown to help build self-awareness, help make effective choices, reduce the impact. of worry, and build positive connections. mentalhealthmonth.org.au

Mental Health Month 2022 has kicked off.

It's all about raising awareness of the activities and ideas that can have a positive impact on our, and our communities', mental health and wellbeing. Mental Health is not just an individual's problem and responsibility; the world we live on has a significant impact on our wellbeing.

The beautiful artwork for this year's Mental Health Month is by Byron Bay artist Nina Hurr, and it celebrates all the good things in our community that keep us all mentally well.

National Gallery of Victoria 'Quiet Sessions'

Public spaces can be a bit full on for some people, which impacts on inclusion and participation. The NGV is running a few session that are designed to be more accessible for people with sensory needs.

From the NGV: 'Q***R shines a light on the NGV Collection to examine and reveal the q***r stories works of art can tell. This exhibition of works from the NGV Collection spans historical eras and diverse media including painting, drawing, photography, decorative arts, fashion, video, sculpture, and design and explores q***rness as an expression of sexuality and gender, a political movement, a sensibility, and as an attitude that defies fixed definition'.

Please note this exhibition contains glass floors which may be disorientating for some visitors. Quiet session is on April 9, 8.30am-10am, book via NGV website, free entry.
