โ€œI struggle to open jarsโ€

We hear that too often as hand therapists.

This difficulty is unfortunately common in those with arthritis or weakness in their hands or wrists. However, it doesnโ€™t have to be that way! Hand therapists teach you many ways to improve your hand strength and joint stability, as well as activity modification and use of adaptive aids if necessary (did you know there are automatic jar openers?). ๐Ÿค”

Say yes to conquering those tight jars! ๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿบ

This is a question we often get asked by patients!

Bone and soft tissue go through 3 stages of healing - inflammation, proliferation and remodelling. It can generally take about 2 to 3 months for a full recovery; however, this process can often lengthen due to inadequate rest, precautions and loading. Thatโ€™s why early intervention is crucial. ๐Ÿค“

If you have an acute hand injury or an injury that doesnโ€™t seem to get better, come to us for the right advice!

*Paediatric trigger thumb*

This condition affects 1-3 out of every 1000 children where the thumb is stuck in a bent position. It is believed to be due to a size mismatch between the FPL tendon and A1 pulley, either from tendon swelling or thickening of the pulley. Therapy would be a good option to consider prior to surgery.

Here we have a 3 year old child with a 25 degree IPJ flexion deformity. She was able to fully flex the IPJ but was unable to straighten the joint. She was given a (cute) customised splint along with regular massage and stretches, with her splint adjusted every fortnight. Note her improvement over the course of 6 weeks with her IPJ in neutral and no longer locking. ๐Ÿค“

*Thinking out of the box*

This patient was really struggling to flex her thumb following a 100% APL & EPB laceration repair due to extensive scar adhesion and tendon/muscle tightness (see our Instagram post for the video). Her thumb was also constantly resting in extension. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

We employed various strategies including lots of scar and soft tissue massage, kinesiology taping (to lift and glide the skin forward), flexion wrap and a thumb splint to hold her thumb in a functional position, at the same time providing a gentle, low load stretch. Now at least she can comfortably oppose to her middle finger and her thumb is in a more relaxed posture! ๐Ÿค“
