"Post-traumatic growth is not about returning to who we were before trauma, but about becoming someone new because of it." -Lawrence Calhoun

After the Black Summer bushfires, vast eucalypt forests seemed lost—blackened and bare. Yet after some time, many burst into life, sending fresh green shoots out of scorched trunks from buds hidden in safe keeping beneath their bark. A stark and stunning reminder: resilience is written into the land like it is written into our bodies. 🌿🔥

"Once you start approaching your body with curiosity rather than with fear, everything shifts." -Bessel van der Kolk

The second of the three core principles of Natural Mind Therapy is curiosity. As children we are naturally open and inquisitive beings, exploring and experimenting with a seemingly limitless sense of curiosity. But somehow a lot of us lose touch with that innate quality, and we can get a bit stuck in habitual ways of knowing and being in the world.

When we tap into this ability and invite it into our work in therapy, there is a space that reopens that is imbued with possibility and potential. By getting really curious and being open to new experiences and perspectives, we can start to become unstuck from our habitual patterns.

In doing so, we can also remember a kind of awe and appreciation that we naturally had as children that can bring a lot of joy and aliveness back into our lives as adults. Without needing to get anywhere or fix anything, we can simply explore our inner and outer world with delight and gratitude.

"All good therapy is collaborative"-Giovanni Liotti

The first of the three core principles of Natural Mind Therapy is collaboration. Even though we humans certainly have instincts that drive competitive behaviour, arguably our greatest evolutionary strength as a species is our capacity for collaboration.

In many ways, our openness to collaboration is directly connected with how well we cope with stress. We're simply not built to cope with things in isolation. Improving our collaborative skill can be a direct way of alleviating and protecting against psychological distress.

In therapy, developing this skill emerges in the "we" space, the in-between, the intersubjective field. Whatever we do, we do together. Upon this foundation, over time, deep and lasting change becomes possible.

Rather than psychotherapy and meditation being in some way or another about fixing something that is broken, both can be a practice of harmonising with nature within, between, and beyond. This view is a radical paradigm shift away from diagnosing, separating, and pathologising our human experience, and towards remembering our true identity as a wave in an ocean of interbeing.

What is Integrative Psychotherapy?

Integrative psychotherapy honours the whole person - the body, emotions, imagination, and thoughts. It is an approach to therapy that integrates different theories and models, recognising that no single method holds all the answers.

This perspective is supported by common factors research that demonstrates that the therapeutic relationship, empathy, collaboration, and your engagement with the process are some of the keys to healing and transformation.

What is Natural Mind Therapy?

Natural Mind Therapy aspires to guide a process of deep remembering - it is a practice of healing and soul retrieval through relationship. Relationship within, between, and beyond. Relationship with self, other, and the natural world. It is a seeking to understand and embrace our deep evolutionary heritage as the human animal that we each are.

And it is also a therapy that aims to contemplate our relationship with culture and society. It is dedicated to the life of the mind and to understanding the systems of language and thought that can bind, restrict, and separate, and uncovering other ways of knowing that can weave us into deeper relationship and belonging with the animate everything.

In the borderlands between nature and culture, there is a liminal space that calls to us. In this cultural moment poised between possibility and peril, let's step into that space together.
