High eye pressure often has no symptoms at all until damage is already done.

As an eye surgeon, I’ve seen patients who never noticed a thing… Until they lost part of their vision permanently.

And the hardest part? It was preventable.

If you’re over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, or have other risk factors like diabetes or steroid use, get your eye pressure checked at least once every 6 to 12 months.

Even if your vision feels “fine.” It’s quick. It’s painless. And it could save your sight.

Most people know that exercise is good for your eyes.
But some movements can actually raise your eye pressure, especially if you’re already managing it.

As an eye surgeon, here are 3 things I tell my patients to be careful with:
1️⃣ Heavy weightlifting - Holding your breath during lifts (like squats or deadlifts) can spike internal pressure, including inside the eye.
2️⃣ Upside-down yoga poses - Headstands or downward dog increase blood flow to the head, which may temporarily raise eye pressure.
3️⃣ Straining during high-intensity workouts - Whether it’s sprinting or CrossFit, holding tension while pushing hard can affect your eye pressure.

I’m not saying stop exercising. But the way you move matters, especially if you need to protect your eye from high eye pressure.

Ozempic has taken the world by storm.

It's everywhere, in conversations about weight loss, blood sugar, even celebrity wellness routines.

But there's one thing almost no one is talking about:
👉 its potential effects on your eyes.

These medications work by shifting blood sugar and fluid balance. But your eyes, especially your optic nerve and retina, are incredibly sensitive to those internal changes.

This doesn’t mean Ozempic is dangerous.
But it does mean you need to pay attention.

✔️ If you're using Ozempic and notice anything unusual with your vision, don’t wait.
✔️ Book an eye check.

Your eyes often feel the effects before the rest of your body does.

“Normal” eye pressure doesn’t always mean everything is fine.
As an ophthalmologist, I’ve seen patients lose vision even when their eye pressures were within the so-called “normal” range.

Why? Because some optic nerves are more vulnerable than others. And for those patients, even normal readings can still mean slow, silent damage over time.

That’s why deeper, more holistic support matters — beyond just lowering eye pressure. We need to look at circulation, inflammation, and the resilience of the optic nerve itself.

Protecting vision isn’t just about being happy with a number… it’s about supporting the whole system that keeps your sight intact.

And the earlier we start, the healthier our vision will be.

A few weeks ago, I had a great time at the GENEYE Surgical Training Day — a perfect reminder that looking after ourselves is essential if we want to keep showing up fully for our patients.

Always a bonus to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones — such a diverse group doing brilliant work.

If you haven’t been before, it’s well worth taking the day. It’s not just about skills — it’s about stepping back, learning with intention, and remembering why we do what we do. 👁️👏

Think alcohol only affects your liver?

Turns out, your eyes might be paying the price too.

Swipe to find out how alcohol can affect your vision.

Very happy to share that from June 2025, I’ll be consulting at Vision Eye Institute Blackburn, joining a fantastic team that includes Lewis Levitz, Raj Pathmaraj, Alex Ioannidis, Christian Raj, Abi Tenen, and Rasik Vajpayee.

I’ll be bringing my full glaucoma toolkit — lasers, stents, shunts — and am happy to assist with complex or challenging cases.

I also warmly welcome patients who prefer to consult in Mandarin, Cantonese, or even Penang-style Hokkien-Manglish (with some creative interpretation 😄).

Excited to get started and honoured to be joining the Blackburn Eye A-team!

As an eye specialist (and a coffee drinker), I get asked this more often than you’d think.

The short answer? It depends.

For most people, moderate coffee intake is fine. But for those with certain eye conditions — especially where eye pressure is a concern — caffeine may not be so harmless.

Even one cup of coffee can cause a short-term rise in eye pressure, and in some sensitive individuals, that pressure can stay elevated longer than expected.

I’m not saying you need to quit coffee completely. But if you’re already managing an eye condition, it’s worth knowing how caffeine could be affecting your optic nerve over time.

I really enjoyed this session where I had the chance to share my experience with standalone iStent implantation — particularly in cases where eye pressure remains elevated despite maximum medical therapy, and where filtering surgery isn’t a suitable option.

It was great to follow on from Michael Shiu, who opened the evening with his valuable insights on standalone stent use.

A big thank you to Carmine Dromi, Paul Gori, and David Milburn from Glaukos for putting together such a thoughtful and engaging night of learning and discussion.

Very grateful to be featured in the latest issue of Insight Magazine, alongside Simon Skalicky, where we had the opportunity to discuss the often-overlooked link between stress and glaucoma.

In my view, stress remains an under-recognised risk factor — not just in glaucoma, but in eye health more broadly.

We need to have more open conversations about how mental wellbeing intersects with vision care, and what we can do to manage its impact.

Thank you to Rob from Insight Ophthalmic News for the thoughtful interview and for shining a light on such an important and timely topic.
