Frozen shoulder is very common in perimenopausal women, between the age of 40-60.
One explanation from a Chinese Medicine perspective is Qi and blood stasis due to hormonal changes.

Cupping and acupuncture locally and distally can help.
As the pain will be located in slightly different areas for everyone, we will palpate the meridian for the points that are most sore and needle these.

There is also a point on the leg, especially for shoulder pain!

Lita Krumins is available:
Thursday 8am - 8pm
Saturday 8am - 3pm

Not the ususal clients we see here at Bodyactive Health!
So nice to get away for the weekend and take a walk by the mighty Murray on a sunny winter morning. The mother and joey were so cute.

Calf cramps are very common during pregnancy.
One explanation is that as more blood is directed to the uterus to support the growing baby, there may be a slight decrease in the blood supply and circulation to other areas of the body such as the calves or feet. This can lead to an accumulation of lactic acid and wastes, and can cause swelling, tightness and cramps.
Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture can help with these types of cramps and poor circulation.

Lita Krumins is available at Bodyactive on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Excluding a lower back spinal injury, the most common cause of hip and sciatic pain is Piriformis Syndrome.
This occurs when the piriformis muscle which sits deep in the hip and runs between the top of the leg and the sacrum, becomes tight and can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing inflammation and pain in your hip and down your leg.
Sitting for long periods, especially with legs crossed, overexercising, not warming up or stretching, can all contribute to a tight piriformis.
Piriformis pain can be relieved with Acupuncture, Remedial Massage and stretching exercises.

A few things I’ve been treating recently in clinic:

Insomnia, Stress and Exhaustion

These are possibly the most common things I see in clinic.
Often all three together and mixed with other issues like anxiety and neck pain. Sometimes they may not be the main complaint, but perhaps part of the overall health picture.

As acupuncture works on regulating the nervous system, it is particularly good at inducing a calming and relaxed feeling, and there are even specific acupuncture points that help induce sleep.

Herbs are a really great addition to take at home if you are struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep.

If you would like help with any of these, you can make an appointment to see our Acupucturist Lita Krumins using the link below:

Next time you are out for a walk, listening to some mindful meditation or a podcast and you pass a lavender bush, stop for a moment, rub your hand over the flowers, have a smell and wonder where that beautiful perfume comes from.

Stop, breath it in and be mindful.

What should you expect in your first acupuncture appointment with Lita Krumins?

To begin with, you will have someone who will listen to your health story and help you with your health journey!
The consultation will begin with a discussion of your health issues and history as well as questions about your overall health, wellness & diet.
To make a complete diagnosis from a Chinese Medicine point of view, we will also feel the pulse on both wrists and have a look at your tongue. A lot can be learnt of what is going on internally just by looking at the tongue!
Once a diagnosis is reached, a treatment plan will be discussed. This will likely include acupuncture, but also Gua Sha & cupping if indicated.
Often the acupuncture needles are inserted into points below the elbows or knees, so you can remain fully clothed. Just wear something loose and comfy.
Gua Sha & cupping is used to release lactic acid in muscles, increase blood flow and stimualte Qi in the area.
If duscussed, at the end of the treatment you may be given some Chinese herbs to take home.
These are to be taken to support the improvement in your health between treatments.
Finally, together with Lita, you will formulate a treatment plan to continue working on your health.

What is the difference between Acupuncture and dry needling?

This is a really common question we get asked: how does Acupuncture differ from dry needling?

Dry Needling is a technique used to treat musculoskeletal conditions.
It focuses on inserting needles directly into the affected muscle area, or into what are called trigger points of the muscle, to release the knot or tight area.

Acupuncture works completely differently.

The philosophy of Acupuncture can be traced back thousands of years and is rooted in the concept of Qi - the body’s vital energy.
Acupuncture needles are very fine and these are inserted into seemingly random points, often below the elbows and knees.

These points can assist in treating the condition (even if far away from the location of the pain!) and they also stimulate the associated channel that’s linked to the condition.
So if you have pain or restiction in you right shoulder, your Acupuncturist may put the needles in your left calve or foot!

Sounds strange, but it works.
