For the past 9 and a half years, Bupa Ballarat has felt like more than just work — it’s felt like family. 💙

“What I love most is the residents and my colleagues. We’re all part of a family, and knowing you can make a difference in someone’s day means everything.”

One of the biggest highlights each year is marching in the Ballarat Begonia Parade alongside our intergenerational partners at Journey Early Learning Centre.

“Seeing the community cheer and watching our residents and the children light up is such a proud moment. It’s really special to see our residents shine.”

At the heart of it all, it’s the little connections that matter most — knowing each resident and making sure everyone feels like they have a friend.

You don’t need to have all the answers to help someone through a mental health crisis.

Often the most powerful thing you can do is simply be there. Listening, showing patience and reminding someone they’re not alone can make a real difference.

The latest Bupa Pulse Check, shows the number of Australians accessing three or more mental health sources increased with family and friends topping the list for support followed by general practitioners.

If someone you care about is struggling, encouraging them to speak with a GP or mental health professional can also be an important next step.

Learn more about supporting someone during a mental health crisis via the link in our bio or take the time to speak with one of our Mindplace psychologists.

Finding a sport that clicks can change everything.

After medically retiring from the army, Kerri-Ann wasn’t sure what her body would be capable of next.

At a Bupa Try Para Sports event in 2024, she found something unexpected - possibility.

Now, Para triathlon gives her a new way to challenge herself, channel her energy and feel at home in her body again.

“It’s really empowering.”

Alan doesn’t remember every name, but he remembers exactly what serving his country meant.

Growing up just after World War II, with a father who served in the Australian Army, Alan has always understood the weight of that sacrifice and the privilege of the life that followed.

As a licensed pilot who regularly took the skies in a Chipmunk in NSW, Alan served in the RAAF from 1961 to 1973, spending much of his time stationed in Malaysia and Thailand.

He’s lost the photos from that time, but not the memories.
“I remember the people I served with… even if the names aren’t all there anymore.”

For Alan, who now lives in our Aged Care home in Ballarat, ANZAC Day hasn’t changed. It’s about respect. It’s about those who served and those who never came home.

To Alan, to the veterans who are now Bupa team members, and to all who have served – we thank you.

For Anna, reception is about more than phones and bookings.

It is about staying organised, helping people feel understood and creating calm in a busy space. Whether that means finding an interpreter or just taking a moment to ask about someone’s day, she believes small actions can make a big difference.

She loves meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds at our Bupa Medical Visa Services clinic in Dandenong. Every day brings someone new.

Nothing brings people together quite like a bake off.

At our Ballarat home, the ovens were on, and the competition was (very) serious for this year’s Anzac biscuit bake off.

Soft or crunchy, golden or slightly… “well done” — everyone had their own take.

“I’ve been making these for years and I’m still not sharing my secret,” Esther laughed.

Safe to say, there were no losers… just a lot of full stomachs.

Our friends at the Black Dog Institute have found mental health conditions arise most often when we are young… even if it's at a smaller scale.

If you or someone you love are struggling, reach out for help. Like with all health issues, the earlier it is addressed, the better the outcome.

A GP consult, an appointment with a empathetic psychologist such as those at Mindplace or Black Dog Institute’s free resources can be a great place to start your journey towards a happier tomorrow.
