Remembering Gary Sauvarin:

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Gary Sauvarin, earlier this month.

Gary was a passionate leader and volunteer with the Victorian AIDS Council (now Thorne Harbour Health) throughout the 1990s, playing a vital role in the creation and success of our Development Program. As convenor, he guided fundraising, bequests, events, and outreach, drawing on his experience as an Australian diplomat, businessman, and community leader.

Gary also championed cooperation between Victoria’s LGBTIQ+ communities and the Jewish community, fostering important connections with Temple Beth Israel and Aleph, the Jewish LGBTIQ+ organisation.

We honour Gary’s dedication, tenacity, and the many contributions he made to our organisation and community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

Bi+ people are the largest part of our LGBTIQ+ communities.

Yet too often, visibility and recognition are a struggle.

Today we’re saying loud and clear: our services must reflect bi+ people — through inclusive language, safer spaces, and breaking assumptions.

The work continues every day, but today especially: we see you. 💜

The loss of her steadfast leadership and community wisdom will be felt by many in our communities across the globe - especially in our international trans and gender diverse communities.

Rest in power.

We've just launched Innovate — our second Reconciliation Action Plan.

This RAP sets out practical steps to embed reconciliation into our everyday work, including:

🖤 Hosting and participating in NAIDOC Week & National Reconciliation Week
💛 Offering free THH memberships to Rainbow Mob at key times
❤ Embedding anti-racism and cultural learning across our organisation
💚 Creating an Aboriginal recruitment and professional development strategy
💙 Continuing our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Educator role

But this plan is also about the bigger picture, making reconciliation central to who we are and ensuring our services are culturally safe.

At Thorne Harbour, Rainbow Mob are a vital part of our communities, and their culture and experiences should be present in everything we do.
