March is Women’s History Month, and in celebration we are taking the time this month to acknowledge the histories of some of the Australian women whose achievements advanced the rights and visibility of women in the city of Melbourne, and who are now taking their eternal rest in our cemeteries.

These three selected women greatly influenced the spheres of the arts, science, women’s rights, sports and cultural life in our city. By looking back at the innovative women of the past, we can use their successes and their places in history to help us envision what women’s rights and gender equality looks like to us in 2025 and beyond.

Today, on 11 November, we honour the anniversary of the moment in 1918 when the gunfire on the Western Front fell silent. We pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

As the final resting place for many Australian service men and women, we are privileged to honour their legacy. On Remembrance Day, we take a minute's silence to reflect on their courage and sacrifice.

Please note that the Hawthorn Road entry gate to Brighton General Cemetery will be closed for temporary works to improve the safety and amenity of a small section of road.

The Hawthorn Road gate will be used for exit only. North Road continues as a two-way drive.
There are no restrictions to visit any loved ones on site, although a small section of road will have a minor detour during the works.

We thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

Grief is a strange thing. One moment we feel we’re making progress, and then the next, we’re hit with a painful reminder of our loss. Small things like a song or a memory trip us up, and then there’s the big one—your loved one’s first anniversary of death.

For some, it creeps up on us, and we are left wondering how we’ve lived a whole year without that person in our lives. For others, it lingers in the future. A strange milestone that feels both significant and overwhelming.

It’s true that grief can have stages, but we all wander the path through them at our own pace and in our own way. Preparing for significant anniversaries can help us navigate the emotions and deep sense of loss that such dates can stir. Here are some ways you might like to mark the first anniversary of your loved one’s passing and some ways that you can care for yourself during this period.

If you have ever visited a loved one at a cemetery and noticed that their grave appears to have ‘sunk’, you may have been taken by surprise.
In the article below, we shed some light on the little-known process of grave subsidence, or grave sinking – and the steps our teams take at burial to reduce its effects.

Laying a loved one to rest is one of the most difficult experiences we may go through in a lifetime.
Once the burial has taken place, the journey is far from complete. Returning to your loved one’s grave site to reflect can be an important part of how you choose to honour them throughout your life. You might expect the grave site to look the same each time – and it can be distressing to discover that this is not necessarily the case.

You are not alone – grave sinking is not widely known about in the community. However, you can take comfort in the fact that our team is here to help.
