Today, on World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, we celebrate the grandparents and older people who shape our families and communities with their stories and strength.

'The life of the Church and the world can only be understood in light of the passage of generations' (Pope Leo), and at Mercy Health, we recognise this day — now in its fifth year — which reminds us to place older people at the heart of our lives.

Let’s take this moment to reach out — share a memory, say thank you, or simply spend time together.

Their presence is a gift, and their legacy is one for which we are grateful.

'Blessed are those who have not lost hope' (Sir 14:2)

Mercy Place Fernhill recently celebrated the 100th birthday of resident Helen Marron with a heartwarming gathering.

The celebration was made even more special by the presence of Brad Rowswell MP for Sandringham, who presented Helen with a certificate and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Guests were also delighted by a surprise visit from Hon Tim Wilson MP, adding to the excitement of the day.

Helen’s milestone is a testament to a life well-lived, and the Mercy Place Fernhill community was proud to honour her remarkable journey.

At Werribee Mercy Hospital, we know that healthcare is more than just procedures and appointments — it’s about people. That’s why we’re embracing something powerful in its simplicity: “Hello, my name is…”

These four words mark the beginning of something important. They spark human connection. They acknowledge that every interaction — between a patient and a nurse, a carer and a clinician, a family and a doctor — is a relationship built on trust, empathy, and understanding.

On international Day, we’re reflecting on the power of a simple introduction.

By starting with “hello”, our staff are saying: I see you, I respect you, and I’m here for you. It sets the tone for meaningful collaboration — where we learn from each other, adapt to your needs, and make you feel safe, informed and cared for.

Because at the heart of healthcare is people, and every interaction matters.

Meet Bernadette from our Client Services Team!
With over 20 years nursing experience across hospitals and aged care, Bernadette—fondly known as Bernie—has built a rich and rewarding career in the aged care sector. From Registered Nurse to Service Manager, Bernie has developed a wealth of knowledge supporting our ageing population. Since the end of last year, Bernie has brought her deep understanding of care to her role as a valuable Business Development Consultant at Mercy Health.
Bernie was drawn to Mercy Health because of its alignment with her Catholic values and upbringing. As she puts it:
“It’s great to work for a not-for-profit. I love being able to assist families during what is often one of their darkest times—helping them find aged care solutions for their loved ones.”
She is passionate about making the admissions process more family-focused and home-like, and is excited to be part of that change.
Outside of work, Bernie is a proud Netball Mum to two daughters—one playing professionally for West Coast Fever in Perth, and the other competing in Victoria, on the Mornington Peninsula. Bernie is also an animal lover, (with two pet cats and hopefully a new puppy soon), a keen cook and baker (her team is regularly spoiled with treats) and enjoys beach walks and a good book.
Need help navigating aged care options, or want to book a tour of one of our homes? Call Bernie on 1300 164 833—she’d love to hear from you!

Introducing Jake: A pillar of support for Aboriginal health at Werribee Mercy Hospital

We are excited to welcome Jake, a proud Jawoyn man with links to the Torres Strait, to our Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) team at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Jake’s extensive experience in emergency management and community care makes him a valuable asset to our team.

"If you visit the hospital, ask to meet with the AHLO team. Even if it is to say hello or have a cuppa and a yarn," Jake encourages.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face significant health disparities, including higher rates of chronic diseases and lower life expectancy. For instance, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are five times more likely to suffer from diabetes and four times more likely to have chronic kidney disease compared to non- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

At Mercy Health, we are committed to Closing the Gap by ensuring every patient receives culturally safe, compassionate care. Jake’s work is a testament to this commitment.

COVID-19 is still with us, and cases are rising across Victoria.
As winter sets in, simple actions can help protect you and those around you.

Stay home if you’re unwell, wear a mask if you have symptoms or are visiting high-risk settings, and open windows where possible to let fresh air in. Keep up good hygiene and speak to your doctor if you're at higher risk of serious illness.

COVID boosters remain free and are one of the best ways to stay protected.

When 37-year-old Grant, who lives with disability, shared his wish to see Jimmy Barnes live in concert in Melbourne, it was a bold and beautiful idea. Thanks to a team of passionate people, that wish became a reality 😃

Home Care Worker Amanda volunteered to accompany Grant to the show, making sure he had the support he needed to enjoy every moment. Behind the scenes, Grant's care team worked hard to confirm his ticket, just one day before the concert. By then, George was already packed and buzzing with excitement 🤩

When Jimmy Barnes took to the stage, George was right there in the crowd, living his dream 🎉🎶 This is what person-centred care looks like. A team effort, a shared goal, and a night to remember!

This NAIDOC Week, Mercy Health sites across the country came together to honour “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy” — celebrating 50 years of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, cultures and contributions.

From tasting stations and market stalls to smoking ceremonies and reflections, our events created space for connection, learning and cultural pride.

At Werribee Mercy Hospital, staff were privileged to witness a powerful moment of cultural practice and generational connection. Samantha, a Bunurong/Boonwurrung woman and Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO), gave the Welcome to Country and shared a teaching with her daughter, Isla, in Boonwurrung language:
“Bunjil’s daughter, Karakarok, told us women should never be without spear or fire.”

Samantha then ground ochre and adorned Isla’s face, demonstrating the passing of cultural knowledge from mother to daughter. Together, they used a traditional fire torch, handing it to Jake, a Jawoyn man and fellow AHLO, who led the smoking ceremony that followed.

Thank you to all who took part — whether by attending a local event, sharing stories, or taking time to reflect.

As always, we walk forward guided by the wisdom of Elders and the strength of those who’ve paved the way. May the next generation continue to rise, empowered by legacy and community.

🖤❤️💛

Meet Piraveen!

A seasoned medical doctor from the University of Melbourne, Piraveen’s passion for patient care and system-wide improvement led him to a leadership role in healthcare.

After five years on the clinical frontline, he recognised the need for broader changes and shifted his focus to quality, strategy, and workforce development.

“I loved clinical work, but it was evident that there were improvements to be made at a systems level. So, that’s when I decided to pursue a fellowship at the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, and an MBA.”

Piraveen joined Mercy Hospital for Women in 2023, drawn to our strong reputation for delivering high-quality care and commitment to serving the community.

“What appealed to me about Mercy Health is the high sense of community and purpose. The people are aligned with the organisation’s core values and work together, focusing less on hierarchy and more on making a meaningful impact.”
