2 weeks ago, we proudly hosted the 2nd MP MSK Matters event of 2025! It was a fantastic evening filled with insightful presentations from Matthew Andrews, David Schwarz, Lucija Peric, Craig Frawley, and our very own Dr Leesa Huguenin and Dr Laura McDonald-Wedding.

Craig provided an informative update on 'Cannabinoids and Unregistered Pain Medications'. Leesa and Laura teamed up to discuss 'Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome (RED-S)', presenting several case studies. Lucija had everyone in the room up and moving during her engaging presentation on 'Play-Based Rehabilitation for Paediatric Hypermobility'. Lastly, our guest speaker, David Schwarz, shared his inspiring story of battling mental health challenges and addiction. He also reflected on his time in the AFL and, in more recent years, his commitment to supporting others on their recovery journey.

Congratulations to Georgia, who won the raffle and scored herself a $280 ASICS gift voucher!

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors: LifeHealthcare, Zaparas Lawyers, and ASICS, whose support makes these events possible.

We also want to extend our appreciation to the MP MSK Matters Committee, presenters, sponsors, and all of our guests who made this event memorable.

We look forward to seeing you all at our final event of 2025, on Tuesday the 9th of September, where we will have presentations from Dr Wai-Leng Chue, Dr John Brooks, Bree Van Ryswyk, and our guest speaker, Richard Weiss (OLY).

Tickets are available to purchase via the link below, we look forward to seeing you there!

Partial tears of tendons - By Dr Leesa Huguenin

It can be quite alarming to be told that you have a tear in your tendon, but rest assured, in most cases, tears can be treated conservatively and do extremely well.

A tendon is made up of a whole lot of tendon fibres, kind of like a bunch of cooked spaghetti. Sometimes, all the fibres will tear at once. This is called a tendon rupture.

Most times, only a few separate fibres will be damaged (tendinopathy) or a small bunch close together will be damaged (partial tear). This is not like tearing a piece of paper in half, it is more like stretching out your bunch of spaghetti until some of the fibres separate.

The impact of this can be variable. Some people have partial tears without any symptoms at all. Usually, the symptoms will relate to how many fibres are damaged and how much the tendon is reacting to the damage.
We can identify many of the features of partial tears with ultrasound and ultrasound is often even better than MRI at evaluating them.

Depending on those features, and which tendon is involved, your Sport and Exercise Physician can help you decide on the best options for treatment.

Sometimes treatment just involves graduated load. Sometimes we use medications or topical treatments and sometimes injections can be required. Surgery is usually not required for most partial tears. One tendon requiring closer consideration of surgical referral is the supraspinatus in the shoulder. Having said that, conservative treatment is often still best, but it is important to consider the longer- term outcomes, which can be influenced by your age, activity and the type of tear.

So, if you have been told that you have a partial tear, donโ€™t panic. A thorough clinical and ultrasound assessment can help you decide on the best treatment approach for your individual case.
