It’s not just hocus PoCUS, it really is magic! 🎩 ⠀⁠
⁠
PoCUS, or, “Point of Care Ultrasound” refers to the use of ultrasound to diagnose problems wherever a patient is being treated. 😷 ⁠
⁠
In the veterinary world, it refers to patients being examined in the emergency room, cage side or for large animals, on the farm and in the stable.⁠
⠀⁠⠀⁠
Here are just some applications of PoCUS for small animal vets:⠀ .⁠⠀⁠
1️⃣ The collapsed patient or patient with a history of trauma that you are stabilising in the treatment room: use AFAST to rule out free abdominal fluid/intraabdominal haemorrhage.⁠⠀⁠
2️⃣ The dyspneic patient that you are getting on oxygen - use TFAST or VetBLUE to quickly rule in or out pulmonary oedema, pleural/pericardial effusions or pneumothorax.⠀⁠⠀⁠
3️⃣ Assess the critical patient collapsed from an Addisonian crisis/anaphylactic shock/SIRS/hypovolemia quickly by assessing the caudal vena cava collapsibility index or CVC to Ao ratio and repeat to assess.⁠⠀⁠
⁠⠀⁠
Don’t forget to do serial exams on hospital patients to assess response to treatment and/or the need to alter treatment.⁠⠀⁠⠀⁠

✳️Stands for “Digital Imaging Communications in Medicine”⁣⠀⁠
✳️The accepted standard in human medicine for exchanging medical images ⁣⠀⁠
✳️Supported by the ACVR as the digital imaging standard in veterinary medicine⁣⠀⁠
✳️Useful in interfacing image data with medical information systems (e.g. practice management software⁣⠀⁠
