Save the Date: Stroke Week is coming up from August 4 –10.
National Stroke Week is all about empowering our community to learn the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke - because knowing them could save a life.

The F.A.S.T. test as a simple way to remember the most common signs of stroke:
Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms – Can they lift both arms?
Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 immediately.
Learn the common signs of stroke - you could save someone’s life, or even your own.

Data shows that men are nearly 50% more likely to experience a stroke than women and stroke kills more Aussie men than prostate cancer.

Concerningly, almost half of the men in Australia would not know they were dealing with a stroke if they saw someone displaying the main signs. That equates to roughly five million blokes.

This week Stroke Foundation is calling on Aussies to share with the bloke beside them about the signs of a stroke and ask men to put their health first.

Check out this powerful video telling the stories of Aussie men who have survived stroke:

Today marks 11 years since my stroke - a journey I never expected but one that has taught me so much. Through the challenges, I’ve been lifted by the kindness, patience, and support of so many people.

To my wife and my kids, family, friends, acquaintances, and everyone who has helped me through this and encouraged me along the way - thank you. I wouldn’t be here without you. Your belief in me has made all the difference, and I am deeply grateful.

Onwards and upwards,

Cheers
Paul 🙏🏻❤️🎗️

Is one of your new year’s resolutions to get moving or do more exercise?
Whether you're building strength, sharpening your memory, or you’re worried about having another stroke, exercise and movement can help. But where do you start?
Firstly, you don’t have to do it alone—your physiotherapist or healthcare team can help you create a plan that works for you.
Check out what team I-REBOUND say about exercise and how they include it in their day: https://irebound.enableme.org.au/move-more
What about obstacles to physical activity, such as stiffness, weakness, fatigue?
These issues can certainly make someone wary to get active. However, exercise may improve stiffness, weakness and fatigue over time.
If you’re concerned about falls, speak to your physiotherapist about choosing the right form of activity and exercise as they can help to minimise your risk of falling or other injuries.
Most importantly choose a form of exercise or activity that you like - you are more likely to stick at it.
I-REBOUND is an online resource portal co-designed by people living with stroke, researchers from Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), The University of Newcastle, Australia and partnering with Stroke Foundation.
Got more questions, call the StrokeLine team on 1800 787 653.

Check out my new blog post - ‘Post-Stroke Recovery and the Role of Botox‘

When my stroke occurred, it dramatically altered my body. The right side was paralysed, while I am walking, this paralysis leaving me to navigate life with only my left hand. A pivotal part of my recovery was discovering Botox—not for its popular cosmetic uses, but for managing muscle spasticity.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of sharing my stroke story with an hard-working, dedicated group at Omnicon Constructions. The audience—mainly working-age individuals in their early 30s, many with young families—brought a special energy to the conversation. The setting, a beautiful outdoor space/roof, was perfect for connecting on such an important topic. Grateful for the opportunity to speak and for the support of everyone who joined. Thank you Josh Lissauer and Dave Skurnik for organising this! 🙏🏻👍🧠🗣️

Just had a short kayak paddle in my son this weekend while I was away! Despite the challenges of living with semiparesis after my stroke, I’ve been pushing myself to try new things. It was challenging but empowering. Grateful for the journey and the progress!
