Away for a very short and much deserved break !
Feel free to guess where
As I always say , I love general practice and can’t see myself doing anything else , however the toll it takes on you, physically , mentally and emotionally is massive !
So a break like this is always warranted .

General practice ! Where do I start .
But as you all know I don’t normally locum or move around a lot , I find my clinic and then settle there , so mostly I worked in Warrnambool Medical Centre for 12 years or so , and currently I am in Humphries Road Medical Centre for the last 4 years .

This week , I have decided to do a week of locum in Geelong , for no reason other than just aim to get a break of normal stressful life routine …
And it just has made me think ,
How privileged I am , the ability to just have my handbag and go and work anywhere I want , need nothing ( other than my brain ) , and I can just rock up in a new place , new clinic , new patients … and just do what I do everyday ,
How I can just that easily make a difference in so many people’s life !
I do love general practice , I love what I do .

Evening all 🙂
So this week , I am down working in Geelong , so not in my normal regular clinic Humphries Road Medical Centre.
Just for a change of scenery , and to get the opportunity to meet some new patients 🙂

So a quick post , as it seems that not everyone knows , so some facts about CST ‘ cervical screening test ‘ previously called : Pap smears. Here we go .
1. All women starting from the age of 25 till 74 should be getting one .

2. It is every 5 years ( unless if some abnormalities detected )

3. Yes , there is the option of ‘ self collect ‘ , you still need to see your GP to be guided how to do it , and i reassure it is simple , doable and bery easy !

4. As i Always tell my patients , if you ever get the message or phone call to say your CST is abnormal , please don’t panic .. it doesn’t mean you have cervical cancer , it simply means that there is an abnormality that we need to look at more , manage accordingly to prevent things getting to the cancer stage .

So in a nutshell , make sure you get your CST if you are due , and if you always dread it , please don’t .. it has become so much easier .

Evening all 🙂
Been distracted ! Yesterday was my 16 years old girl birthday ! And wow what a milestone , lol for me at least ! I have made it so far , coz it sure is hard work !
But , as I have promised some of my younger patients to discuss contraception , and I have chosen to start with the implanon , as many refer to it as ‘the rod ‘ , so let’s keep it short and sweet
* implanon lasts for 3 years , so good contraception for young adults .
* you don’t have to remember to take a pill every day .
*insertion and removal is a very easy straight forward procedure , done in the rooms under local , shouldn’t take more than 5 to 10 minutes .
*as I always tell my patients , what happens to bleeding or side effects is really variable , and really you wouldn’t know till you try , as everyone is different .
* bleeding wise : I used the 5 rule , 1 of 5 won’t bleed at all , 1 of 5 will bleed all the time , 3 out of 5 will have some some sort of bleeding , might not as regular as your normal periods .

Hope that helps , please tag the young woman in your life , if you think she needs to learn or know more about contraception .

Hey all 🙂
I thought I ll do another post about breast cancer , last time we talked about screening , this time I thought I ll talk about what the expect when you present to your GP after you have found a lump or worried about some change .
So the normal is that the doctor will
- to start with take a good ‘ history ‘ asking questions about family history, the lump , other symptoms … and much more
- please expect to be examined , so the doctor will examine you , that will be both breasts and sometimes the armpits as well .
- the doctor will then explain to you what they find , think and most likely organise investigations that is needed .

- most of the times that will include an ultrasound and mammogram ( sometimes one or the other ) .

You will most definetly have a follow up booked with your GP to discuss the results , and organise the next steps as needed .

I know it sounds like a lot, but a again please never put off or delay booking in to check , remember ‘ early detection definitely saves lives ‘

So thought a very quick post .
Today : I was a happy 😃 one ! Not one but three patients have seen me for follow up after starting MHT ‘ menopause hormonal therapy ‘ .. and all three has found it effective , one and literally life changing !!
So point is please if it has even crossed your mind , that maybe you are struggling with perimenopause / menopause symptoms , then book a GP appointment now and go and have a discussion .

One of the topics I was asked to talk about is breast cancer , so some points and advice for screening and early detection :
- sadly breast cancer is 1 in 7 , it is the second cause of death in Australia , and the most common cancer in females .

- screening is mainly mammograms .

- mammograms are recommended every 2 years , starting from the age of 50 till 74 . However you are eligible since 40 , and my patients would all know that I do recommend all patients to start at 40 . ( so if not sure , chat to your GP )
- self breast examination : is recommended , and I do tell my patients it is a great idea to get to know how your breasts , however please know IT ISNOT A SUBSTITUTE to screening !

Most importantly , if not sure please please see your GP and get it checked !
Early detection of breast cancer makes a huge difference !

Don’t forget to tag or share this to any lady in your life ! You could be saving their lives .

Another quick post , a topic that comes up a lot in the consulting room :
How to prevent or reduce risk of food allergies in babies : so here are 2 quick points
1. Avoid putting any ‘ food ‘ products on the skin , ie any topical products that had food allergies, common example is goat milk products .

2. Introduce ‘ high allergens food ‘ in their diet before they turn one , those are listed in the pic below .

3. Introduce one food at a time

Hope that helps , don’t forget to share or tag someone who has a little one !

Lighter post today ,
More after opinions from those who does follow my page . Either FB or Instagram .
As explained before , this is a passion of mine .. and it makes me feel more alive .
Don’t get me wrong , General practice is my passion ! the consulting room is where I feel most alive ! But yes one of the many reasons I enjoy General practice is the patient education part and empowering patients to make decisions themselves about their own health .
So the questions are
What content , or what topics should I cover ?
Are the written posts ok ? Or would videos be better ( something I have never done , but should I ? )
I am happy and open to any comments , advice or others.

Also introducing the most important family member : Max !

More facts and more about perimenopause / Menopause
So some quick facts about MHT ( menopausal hormonal therapy )
- in Australia we are still mainly using it for symptomatic treatment meaning for management of symptoms of menopause
( as it sure have also preventative role )
- risks associated with MHT is really minimal , specially if started less than 60 years of age or within 10 years of last period .
- MHT : includes oestrogen , progesterone , testosterone.
Different forms are : vaginal creams , patches , gels , topical creams and tablets .
- there are cases where MHT would be contraindicated , however there are other options that we can try then

So again , if the symptoms are troublesome , book in to your GP and discuss the suitability of MHT
Picture different this time , from my drive home after a longggggg day of general practice .
