‘A healthy life is one that is fulfilled.’ This short, simple statement is one of the hardest things to achieve in reality. We all have goals for greater fulfillment: spend more time with family, catch up with friends, change jobs or find a job, get fit, restart a hobby or learn a new skill, but life can get in the way and we see these fading further and further into the distance, or maybe we just give up and adjust our expectations to live without. The mistake most of us make is we have been told that we first need a goal. This is not true – the goals are clear, it’s finding our way to them that we need. Without overall wellness, your body is getting in the way of your more fulfilled life. Or joints and muscles ache and that puts you off physical activity. Maybe it’s just been so long you had come to think that how you are now is how you will always be. Simply put, it’s hard to do anything for yourself – never mind finding the motivation – if you are tired, sore, stiff, unfit and lacking in energy. Dr Ali Abdo is a qualified osteopath, personal fitness / rehabilitation trainer and sports coach. He followed in the footsteps of his father, taking up wrestling as a young boy and when he realised his talent, he set his sights on competitive wrestling. He has represented Australia at three Olympics and several international championships and is the current top-ranked Australian champion. It was his prowess in the sport that encouraged him to set his sights on Olympic Gold, not the prospect of a medal that led him to take up a sport. Ali knows that to be your best you have to start with your physical well-being.
