How to choose a healthy yogurt?

Many yogurt products contain things that you could do without, like added sweeteners. What should you look for in a healthy yogurt?

Choose unsweetened yogurts

Tip1: Processed yogurt products often contain sweeteners, such as sugar, honey, fruit juice concentrates, and high-fructose corn syrup.

Tip 2: Opt for a high calcium and high protein option. Greek yogurts tend to be higher in protein, as they are strained which removes the liquid whey portion.

Tip 3: Look for probiotic cultures. Some yogurts will provide a source of probiotics, which are the gut-friendly bacteria that support good digestive health.

Plain Greek-style yogurt is relatively high in protein because much of its excess water has been removed. This concentrates the yogurt. On the other extreme, nonfat or “light” yogurts have as little as 4 grams of protein per serving because they have higher water content by volume. You end up with fewer calories and less fat, but also less protein per serving.

Greek or Regular Yogurt?

Plain yogurt typically contains around 10–15 grams of carbs per cup (245 grams), but flavored or sweetened yogurts can easily contain more than 30 grams per serving.

Greek yogurt differs from traditional yogurt because it is strained more times, removing some of the whey and lactose. This gives Greek yogurt about twice as much protein as traditional yogurt and around half the carbs.

When assessing milk , you need to consider the following:

Protein – The higher the better as it helps with keeping you feeling full
Fat – Use the low fat varieties
Calcium – Look for calcium fortified variants
Carbohydrates – Read the nutritional panel and look for the low carb brands
&
Total calories – The fat and carbs make up most of the calories, aim for 100cal per serve.

For Weight loss – stick to skim milk,
IF lactose or Milk allergy – Try Low fat soy milk or almond milk
Oat-milk is higher in carbohydrates but is creamier in texture and froths well for coffee
Rice milk is low in protein and high in carbs
Coconut milk is higher in fats but is very low carb

GROUND BEEF OVER ZOODLES

This simple and super tasty Ground Beef over Zoodles dish is a quick, easy and much healthier alternative to pasta.

INGREDIENTS:

The Meat
450g grassfed lean ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped (save a little bit for garnish)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp dried oregano
120 ml bone broth, or water
1 medium tomato, chopped (save a little bit to garnish)

The Zoodles

2 large zucchini, made into strands with a vegetable spiralizer
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS
Place a well seasoned cast iron skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef, salt and pepper to it. Break the meat up with a wooden spoon and cook it, stirring from time to time, until it becomes brown and crispy, about 8 minutes.
Add the chopped onion, garlic and jalapeno pepper and continue cooking until the veggies are slightly softened, about 1 minute.
Add water and spices and continue cooking until all the water is evaporated, about 1 minute; stir in the tomato and remove to a plate.
Return the skillet to the heat source and add the spiralized zucchini to the pan. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder and stir delicately to distribute the seasoning; cook for about 30 seconds, until the zoodles are barely just softened.
Top with the reserved meat, sprinkle with reserved tomatoes and jalapeno peppers and serve.

TODAY's MEAL: Grilled Portobello Mushrooms

Ingredients
2 tbsp finely chopped red capsicum
½ clove garlic, minced
vegetable spray oil
¼ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pack portobello mushroom cap: around6-8

Method

Preheat grill for medium heat.
In a large bowl, mix the red bell pepper, garlic, onion powder, and ground black pepper.
Add mixture over grill side of the mushroom caps.
Lightly oil the grill grate with spray oil.
Place mushroom over indirect heat, cover, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.

Barramundi with braised green beans, dill and mint 😋

Beans braised in a rich sauce of fennel, garlic, tomatoes and wine are a perfect accompaniment to pan-fried barramundi fillets.

INGREDIENTS
* 1 tbsp olive oil
* 4 skinless barramundi fillets (200gm each)
* 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
* 1 garlic clove, thinly sliced
* ½ cup each mint and dill, coarsely chopped
Braised green beans
* 2 tbsp olive oil
* 1 onion, thinly sliced
* 1 baby fennel bulb, thinly sliced, fronds reserved
* 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
* 300 gm green beans, trimmed and thinly sliced
* 400 gm canned chopped tomatoes
* 100 ml dry white wine
* 1/4 cup each (firmly packed) dill and flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
* Juice of 1 lemon, or to taste

METHOD:
Main
1.Preheat oven to 220C. For braised beans, heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, add onion, fennel and garlic and sauté until tender (4-5 minutes). Stir in beans, then tomato and wine, season to taste and simmer until beans are tender (5-6 minutes). Add herbs and lemon juice and keep warm.
2.Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat, add fish, fry until well browned (2-3 minutes), then turn and brown other side. Transfer to an oven tray, season to taste and roast until just cooked through (2-3 minutes). Meanwhile, wipe out pan with paper towels, add extra-virgin olive oil and garlic and cook over medium heat until light golden (1 minute). Add herbs and lemon rind, fry until crisp (1-2 minutes), then remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
3.Top braised green beans with fish, herb and garlic mixture and fennel fronds and serve with lemon wedges.
