𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

The menstrual cycle is a natural process reflecting a woman’s reproductive health. It has four phases: menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal. Each phase is guided by hormonal changes that prepare the body for pregnancy. In the menstrual phase, the uterus sheds its lining as monthly bleeding. During the follicular phase, hormones help eggs mature and thicken the uterine lining. Around mid-cycle, ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released the most fertile time. The luteal phase follows, where progesterone prepares the uterus for possible implantation. If pregnancy does not occur, hormone levels drop and the cycle begins again. Understanding these phases helps women know what is normal and when to seek medical advice for irregularities.

For personalized advice about your cycle, fertility, or reproductive health, consult with Dr. Samina Ahmed.

Here are some simple steps every woman should follow:

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 → Pads or tampons should be changed every 4–6 hours to avoid bacterial growth and infections.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 → Clean with plain water or mild soap; harsh chemicals are not needed.

𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 → Cotton underwear keeps the area dry and breathable.

As a doctor, I often meet women who feel anxious or even confused about the changes happening in their bodies during this stage of life. Let me reassure you perimenopause and menopause are natural transitions, not diseases.

Perimenopause is the phase when hormones begin to fluctuate. You might notice irregular cycles, hot flushes, mood changes, or disturbed sleep.

Menopause is when periods have completely stopped for 12 months. It usually happens around the age of 50 and marks the end of fertility but it does not mean the end of your energy, health, or vibrancy.

Every woman’s journey through perimenopause and menopause is different. Some may only feel mild changes, while others need extra support and that’s completely normal. With the right care, this transition can be managed with confidence. I can help you navigate this stage with ease.

When your periods don’t follow the calendar, your body might be telling you something important.

Irregular periods are common, but they’re not something to ignore. Your cycle is a reflection of your overall health, and when it changes without reason, it deserves attention.

Reasons:
Hormonal Imbalances – small shifts in estrogen or progesterone can affect your flow.
Stress & Lifestyle – stress, poor sleep, sudden weight change, or over-exercising can disrupt your cycle.
PCOS – a condition that affects ovulation, often causing irregular or missed periods.
Thyroid Disorders – both underactive and overactive thyroid can disturb cycle regularity.
Perimenopause – as your body transitions, cycles naturally become less predictable.

An occasional irregular cycle is normal, but frequent changes deserve care.

If you’re experiencing irregular cycles, I encourage you to consult with me. Together, we’ll find out the cause and guide you toward a healthier, balanced life.

Salpingectomy — the removal of fallopian tubes is more than just a surgical procedure. It can:
Significantly reduce the risk of ovarian cancer
Provide permanent contraception
Be performed safely during other gynaecological surgeries without causing early menopause

Research shows that many ovarian cancers actually begin in the fallopian tubes. By removing them opportunistically, women can take an important preventive step for their long-term health and wellbeing.

As a Gynaecologist and Fertility Doctor consulting across Melbourne, I am here to guide you with personalised care and informed options for your reproductive health.

Women’s Health Week – Your Wellbeing Matters

This Women’s Health Week is a beautiful reminder that every woman deserves to prioritise her health. Too often, we put our wellbeing last while balancing work, family, and responsibilities but regular gynaecological check-ups are a powerful way to protect your future.

A cervical screening test detects early cervical changes, a self-breast check and breast check help spot changes early, while a mammogram ensures timely breast cancer screening. A pelvic ultrasound helps assess the uterus and ovaries, and a fertility assessment gives clarity about your reproductive health and future choices. Each check-up is not just routine, It’s an investment in peace of mind.

Struggling with heavy periods that affect your energy and daily life?

For many women, heavy menstrual bleeding isn’t just a monthly inconvenience it can lead to fatigue, low confidence, and interruptions in everyday activities.

One effective treatment option is Endometrial Ablation. This minimally invasive procedure treats the inner lining of the uterus to reduce or even stop heavy bleeding. Unlike a hysterectomy, your uterus is preserved but for many women, the improvement is life-changing.

If you are tired of constantly changing pads, missing out on work, or feeling drained every month, it’s time to explore your treatment options.
