At Regis Burnside in South Australia, Maggie is known for the relationships she builds with residents every day.

As a Lifestyle Assistant, she spends time getting to know each person, their stories and what matters to them, helping them feel comfortable and at home.

“You learn so much about people and their histories,” she said. “I’m always in awe of what they’ve done.”

For Maggie, her role is about taking the time to listen and creating moments of connection that shape how residents experience their day.

Her approach reflects how care at Regis Burnside goes beyond daily support, it is about people who take the time to understand everyone around them.

Stuart, a resident at Regis East Malvern in Victoria, loves art and has always been creative. His artistic journey began with sketching portraits, which led him to mosaics and eventually to sculpting.

Moving into aged care hasn’t stopped Stuart from showcasing his art, with Regis Malvern recently proud to exhibit his pieces for other residents, families and visitors to enjoy.

Stuart says he loved seeing people’s reactions and was pleased that residents and team members came to appreciate his work.

His advice for anyone wanting to try sculpting is simple: “Just give it a go and expect it to take time. It’s a hands-on task.”

This week, we acknowledge and celebrate National Reconciliation Week. It’s a chance to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in Australia.

In aged care, we are privileged to care for elders whose stories, wisdom, strength and resilience continue to shape our communities. We acknowledge and thank our First Nations residents, clients and employees whose contribution enrich our organisation every day.

Before retiring, George was a manager of Carlton United Brewery in Sydney. He coordinated teams and ensured the smooth operation of brewing some of Australia’s most iconic beer. Alongside this, George raised two children with his wife, Midge and competed in long-distance triathlons.

Now, living in aged care, the setting may have changed, but George’s approach to life hasn’t - staying active, connected and always ready for a laugh.

You can find George at the front of the line for community outings, he fondly remembers the first trip he went on to scenic Paradise Point, joking with new friends by the beach.

While his daughter found Regis Magnolia, George says, "if I'd have picked it myself, I'd have picked exactly the same spot.”

While reading the monthly resident newsletter, Regis Chelmer resident Ula was surprised and delighted to recognise her old friend Elizabeth, whom she had lost touch with years ago and who now lives at Regis Holland Park. With help from her Home’s team, a reunion was organised.

Ula and Elizabeth have shared a friendship spanning more than 50 years. They first met when their children attended the same school and their daughters grew up side-by-side.

Ula says their, “friendship has truly been a happy story,” and added, “It feels like no time has passed at all, we just picked up right where we left off.”

As the two went to say goodbye, Elizabeth walked Ula to the bus. “I didn’t want to let her go,” Elizabeth said, while Ula added, “now that we know where to find each other, we won’t lose touch again.”

The friends are already looking forward to their next reunion, a High Tea at Regis Chelmer.

During National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who help make our Homes feel more connected, welcoming and supported every day – like Joyce.

After her husband moved into Regis Port Coogee in WA, Joyce began spending more time in the Home to better understand the environment around him. Over time, she became a volunteer companion, building friendships with residents and offering connection and conversation to those who may not receive many visitors.

Alongside supporting residents, Joyce has also formed friendships of her own and found a strong sense of belonging.

“The Regis community has become part of my wider family,” she said.

This National Volunteers Week, we are celebrating the amazing volunteers that dedicate their time to support and care for Regis residents across our homes.

Earlier this week, Regis Port Coogee residents and employees teamed up to celebrate their volunteers, and recognise their valuable contributions.

Bev, who volunteers by taking residents out on beach walks at Regis Port Coogee, said the morning tea was a welcome recognition.

“I felt so valued. I didn’t expect to be honoured just for being a volunteer,” she shared, “small gestures like these really boost our desire to continue giving back to the community.”

This National Volunteer Week, we recognise the volunteers who help make everyday moments meaningful across our homes and services.

Whether it’s sharing a conversation, supporting activities, accompanying residents to appointments or simply being a familiar presence, our volunteers play an important role in helping residents feel connected and supported.

In this video, residents share what their volunteers mean to them and the difference these relationships make in daily life.

To all our volunteers, thank you for the time, care and companionship you bring to Regis.

Today on IDAHOBIT, Regis recognises the importance of creating environments where people feel safe, respected and able to be themselves.

Across our homes and services, we support residents, clients and employees from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Inclusive environments help people feel valued and supported in their daily lives.

IDAHOBIT is a time to acknowledge the impact of discrimination faced by LGBTIQ+ communities and the role we all play in creating safe and welcoming spaces through our actions, language and care.

In aged care, this means recognising each person as an individual and supporting dignity, respect and a sense of belonging at every stage of life.

After a close competition, in the end, it was team Regis Aspley who took out the win. Resident Mike played a key role, scoring an impressive 70 for team Regis Aspley. "I really enjoyed the ten-pin bowling,” he said, “it was even better that Regis Aspley won the day!”

Regis Aspley Lifestyle Coordinator Cathy said the bowling enthusiasts at her Home are, “already looking forward to the next match,” and it won’t be long before the two homes reconnect for another shared activity.
