The word ‘breech’ is thrown around a lot in pregnancy at the 30 week mark, triggering a torrent of worry and distress. The main implication of breech presentation is on delivery therefore, clinically, it is of limited significance prior to 32 weeks. To generate a proactive approach, there is a great way to help create a better position for baby!
Moxibustion (moxa) is advantageous for a breech with an acupuncture point on the little toe. Bladder-67 is hypothesized to stimulate the production of prostaglandins and estrogens - maternal hormones, which are the force behind encouraging labour, aiding in contractions, and increasing baby activity to reposition more favourable.
Chinese medicine has a more poetic tenet: Within the rules of Yin and Yang, pregnancy/fetus are Yin. For growth and development of the pregnancy, Yang energy is required, coming from the mother. Classical theory of Yin and Yang demonstrates Yin moves into Yang into Yin and onwards. Thus, as a fetus reaches its time for earthside, Yin becomes Yang to enable birth to occur.
For a baby to present in an optimal fetal position, there needs to be sufficient ‘Qi & Blood’ for the Yin/Yang conversion. Therefore, stimulating and activating the Qi along the Bladder channel via this dynamic point, promotes qi, mobilises the uterus to turn a fetus. I find it incredibly fascinating the empirical nature of Bladder-67 initiating the turning process from a thermal and chemical stimulation, to improve energy flow to the uterus and create balance.
The philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine always aims to regulate the internal environment of the body to prevent and cure disease and this is great example of a non-invasive, relaxing technique for any mum wanting to feel in control of their pregnancy.
