We are proud to support the next generation of First Nations nurses and midwives through the Brookes Academy at Epworth.

This year, we awarded three scholarships - totalling $20,000 - to support students on their journey into healthcare.

Last week, Epworth Chief Nurse Kate Gillan travelled to Thursday Island for the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives Regional Congress, where she had the honour of presenting the scholarships and connecting with nurses working in, and returning to, remote communities.

The headline says it all! 📰

Epworth Geelong has become the first hospital outside Melbourne to offer deep brain stimulation – giving Western Victorians with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders a treatment option closer to home.

In a significant innovation, neurosurgeon Mr Girish Nair and team pioneered Australian-first ‘frameless’ deep brain stimulation technology at Epworth in 2018 a custom-made 3D printed model to guide the placement of the incisions and wires.

Mark Geddes, from Bannockburn, was the first to undergo the procedure at Epworth Geelong on 24 May 2025 under the care of Epworth neurosurgeon Mr Girish Nair and neurologist Dr Mina Ghaly.

“I am really happy to be getting back to some sort of normality in my life where I can get back to doing what I like to do,” Mark told the Geelong Advertiser

“Everyone at Epworth Geelong has looked after me exceptionally well. Mr Nair and Dr Ghaly are a very good team – I got two of the best doctors you could possibly get.”

The technology is controlled via Bluetooth, which means the stimulation can be switched off or adjusted by neurologists remotely through an online consultation.

In loving memory of Eileen 🕊️

In 1984, Eileen Issell became Epworth’s 1,000th open heart surgery patient. Her successful bypass gave her another 40 wonderful years with her family, who affectionately called her their “Energiser Bunny.”

Eileen passed away in June, leaving behind a powerful legacy of love, laughter and resilience. Her daughter Karen shared, “She was an incredible lady, and our family is so grateful to Epworth and the medical staff for the amazing care Mum received over the years.”

We are honoured to have played a part in Eileen’s journey and we thank Eileen’s family for allowing us to share her story 💙

Why do men and women require different health checks? 🩺

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, we speak to Dr Luke Dunne, GP from Epworth Freemasons, who explains, “The differences essentially come down to our anatomy and physiology. For example, whereas women are at risk of cancers of the cervix, ovaries and uterus, men are at risk of prostate cancer. According to the Cancer Council, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with an estimated one in six males diagnosed by the time they are 85. But, if diagnosed early, prostate cancer has one of the highest five-year survival rates.”

Unlike women, who are often introduced to regular health screenings from a young age, such as breast checks and GP visits for contraception, men typically don’t develop the same routine health-seeking behaviours.

Last week, Epworth Freemasons hosted a GP education evening in recognition of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month 🩺

Epworth specialists - Dr Cori Behrenbruch, Mr Eugene Ong and Dr Glen Guerra - shared valuable insights, research and updates on topics that included young bowel cancer, re**al prolapse, bowel dysfunction post-treatment, and the role of ventral rectopexy in treating anore**al conditions.

It was an engaging night of learning, connection and conversation - thank you to all who braved the chilly Melbourne weather to join us!

June marked Pride Month, which provided an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity and equality, celebrating the richness that diversity brings to our Epworth community.

One recent initiative involves Monique White, Acting CSSD Nurse Unit Manager from our Perioperative Department at Epworth Richmond. Monique was awarded a scholarship from the Epworth Medical Foundation to collaborate with QueerTown, a Melbourne-based organisation focused on LGBTIQA+ education and inclusion.

Professor Andrew Stripp, our Group Chief Executive, and Anton Gaudry, Director of the Epworth Medical Foundation, presented Monique with the scholarship, which will support her efforts to bring inclusive education back to her team.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to partner with QueerTown to support learning in our department,” says Monique. “The workshops and digital modules will help build our understanding of LGBTIQA+ inclusion and practical approaches to allyship.”

These sessions aim to enhance confidence, reduce barriers, and support all team members in contributing to a respectful and inclusive environment for patients, staff, and doctors.

At Epworth, we recognise the role of education and awareness in fostering an environment where everyone feels welcome and respected.

Elwood is officially back on the job! 🐱👮 After a frightful experience last week when he went missing, our Epworth Richmond team and patients were extremely excited to welcome him back.

Elwood is a massive part of our Epworth community, made the Head of Security at our Richmond hospital back in 2020, he has become a beloved, familiar face who brings so much joy to Epworth staff, patients, doctors and visitors. We recently welcomed Elwood back with an upgraded security pass and some yummy treats to share with his brother, Jake.

Meet Marlene Mackintosh, Epworth’s longest-serving volunteer 💙

A chance conversation almost 30 years ago led Marlene to commence volunteering at Epworth Richmond and she is still generously giving up her time to support our patients and their families to this day.. “Volunteering at Epworth is wonderful. You have such camaraderie with the other volunteers and it is so rewarding to help patients during a difficult time,” Marlene said. “If anyone is considering volunteering at Epworth I would say ‘go for it’. You gain so much from the experience.”

Epworth Volunteer Services Manager, Kylie Semple, thanked Marlene for her incredible generosity and dedication to supporting patients. “Marlene’s outstanding volunteer service since 1997 embodies a spirit of dedication that has touched countless lives and helped strengthen our Epworth community in many meaningful ways,” Kylie said.

Bowel cancer doesn’t discriminate by age.
This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we sat down with Dr Suat, General and Colore**al Surgeon at Epworth Eastern, to talk about the symptoms to watch for — and why early detection matters 💙
Dr Suat says recognising the early signs of bowel cancer is key — and it all starts with a conversation with your GP.

Common signs to look out for include:
- perire**al bleeding or blood in the stool
- changes in bowel habits
- unexplained weight or appetite loss
- abdominal pain
- iron deficiency or anaemia

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, speak to your GP about whether a colonoscopy at Epworth is right for you. Early detection saves lives.

When Melbourne yiayia (grandmother) Freda Razos became too unwell to attend her granddaughter Anna’s wedding, her family brought the wedding to Epworth Richmond instead! 💒💗

In a first for the Intensive Care Unit, Epworth Richmond staff hosted the bridal party and family, as they visited Freda between the ceremony and reception. Epworth nurses, Kahlia and Loren created a wedding archway using IV poles and fairy lights, while Kalpana gave Freda a blow wave, and Kim organised a special wedding meal to be served.

A beautiful moment filled with love, tradition and family.

Freda, who was admitted to ICU after COVID-19 progressed to pneumonia and then pneumonitis, has made incredible progress!
