Did you see this in the news? Skimpflation noticed by 75% Australians according to Choice Australia. So, how do we avoid this latest food scam?
#1. Ingredients are listed by weight, so the first few items make up most the mix. If the main ingredient, eg: oats in oat bars moves down the list to number 3 or 4, this is a red flag.
#2. If the front of label says "new recipe" or "new & improved" check what has changed (it may be cost savings for them).
#3. Be aware of common skimpflation tricks such as more puffed grains with less protein rich bases in cereals, or less nuts or seeds in cookies or bars.
