June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, the fourth most common type of newly diagnosed cancer and second deadliest in Australia.

Recently, the team from St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee proudly participated in the Wyndham Health Festival, an inspiring new initiative organised by the Wyndham Health Foundation that places community health and wellbeing in the spotlight.

We were honoured to have Dr Mohammed Khaleel, General Surgeon & Endoscopist, represent St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee as a keynote speaker. Dr Khaleel presented on the important topic of Bowel Cancer Screening, delivering a well-received and engaging session that sparked meaningful discussion and community interaction.

“Bowel Cancer often starts without symptoms, but it doesn’t have to end in tragedy. If you’re aged 45 to 74, a free home test could save your life. Take the test. It’s simple, safe, and effective. Early detection through bowel screening can prevent cancer or catch it early when treatment works best” – Dr Mohammed Khaleel, General Surgeon & Endoscopist

“A lot of my family is in healthcare, and I was really inspired by the work they’ve done. I love helping others, and I love how the body works; nursing was the perfect fit.”

At St Vincent’s, Meg has found more than just a workplace.

“Everyone is so friendly and supportive. I come to work with a big smile, and I always leave with one too.”

This week, Werribee hosted its first on-site Look Good Feel Better workshop, supporting patients emotionally and psychologically during their cancer journey. This free program offers skincare and makeup tips, confidence-building activities, and Confidence Kits donated by industry partners.

Patients received advice on managing side effects such as dryness, redness, and hair loss, along with headwear styling. Participant feedback was very positive, with patients expressing appreciation for the supportive environment.

Jacqui Denison, coordinator of these workshops, said, "It's a super positive start. With the patients that attended, you could see how happy this workshop made them feel. I feel very honoured to be involved in these workshops and bringing smiles to the faces of these lovely people."

Thanks to everyone involved for making this a successful workshop. We look forward to Werribee hosting more sessions.

“My heart had been keeping a secret…”

Sarah was healthy, active, and 49. But one evening at home after work, her heart suddenly stopped.

Sarah had no idea she had an underlying heart condition – until it nearly took her life.

Early diagnosis saves lives. That’s why St Vincent’s Foundation is raising funds for equipment like Holter monitors and cardiac ultrasound probes – tools that help detect hidden heart issues before it’s too late.

❤️ Will you help protect more hearts like Sarah’s?

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside has welcomed Royal Flying Doctor Service clinicians for specialist-led training, designed specifically for the realities of rural and remote healthcare.

Last Friday, our specialists led sessions in cardiology, oncology, infectious diseases, rheumatology, imaging interpretation and more – sharing practical, relevant expertise with the doctors who provide essential care across vast and often isolated regions of Queensland.

We’re proud to be building stronger connections between specialists and RFDS doctors, and ultimately improving outcomes for people in every corner of the regional QLD.

For Karrie, nursing is about the small gestures that help people feel human again.

“People come into the hospital during some of the hardest moments of their lives. I love being able to do the little things, like brushing a patient’s hair, the little things that help them feel like themselves again.”

Her path into nursing was personal.

“I was in and out of the hospital a lot as a kid, and the nurses made a huge difference. That experience stuck with me.”

At St Vincent’s, she’s found a place that feels just right.

“It’s such a supportive environment. It doesn’t feel like work, it feels like being with family and helping people along the way.”
