🗣️✨ Why do speech sounds matter?

Clear speech sounds help kids:

✅ Communicate their ideas confidently
✅ Make and keep friends
✅ Reduce frustration by helping them be understood

When children struggle to say sounds clearly, it can impact their confidence, learning, and social connections. Early support makes a big difference!

👂💬 If you have concerns about your child’s speech sounds, we’re here to help.

"Fine motor skills don’t have to mean complicated activities. Start simple: Try stacking small cups or threading large beads onto a string. 🧩 These activities help with hand-eye coordination, strength, and focus—all while being fun and interactive! 🎉"

Great to see some advocacy from MPs at last, showing understanding and compassion for the clients (and therapists!) impacted by NDIS prices freezes and travel cuts.

Thanks Zali Steggall for bringing some attention to this - especially the quick rush through of the changes - leaving providers scrambling to catch up.

"Did you know? Practicing articulation can be easy and fun at home with activities like 'Sound Scavenger Hunts.' 🔍🚶‍♀️ Have your child find objects around the house that start with a specific sound, like 'S' for sock, spoon, or sun! Not only does it work on articulation, but it also makes learning engaging and interactive. 🗣️💡"

Carolyn joined our team in 2018 after completing her Masters of Speech Pathology and a Bachelor of BioMedicine.

Carolyn leads our School Readiness Program, supporting groups for students starting prep, and working with preschool and early school years clients on all skills relating to school readiness.

Carolyn also develops and provides assessment and education programs for Kindergartens and Childcare centres under the Victorian State Government School Readiness Kindergarten Funding model. In this role she works with centres to identify their needs and develops year long training and support programs to upskill staff and support students in 3 and 4 year old kindergarten in their journey towards school. Carolyn is passionate about this role and working with educators to identify areas of growth and build the capacity of each centre she works with.

She is bright, bubbly and really passionate about delivering the highest quality service to her clients. She believes that play based therapy is the best way to develop children’s skills and enjoys playing and engaging with children to make therapy a positive and fun experience for everyone involved.

Carolyn’s interest in Speech Pathology stemmed from her passion for the sciences- especially human anatomy and physiology, and the interpersonal side of healthcare that Speech Pathology provides. A service trip to Cambodia and working with orphanages and churches there further developed her interest in working with children from young ages. She loves using her creativity to fully engage children in therapy and strives to make therapy an enjoyable experience for clients and families.

Carolyn sees clients in our Eltham and Northcote clinics and in schools.

Taking control of your NDIS planning… things to know:

The NDIS has now introduced quarterly funding periods by default - where plan funding is split evenly across 4 quarters.

You are in control of your plan.
You can request that your plan be *front-loaded*. This allows for more funds to be allocated in the first quarter and rolled over to subsequent quarters if not used.

Frontloading your plan gives you more control over your funds and can help you manage funding for assessments, training, and equipment.

Please also be aware:
You’re entitled to have travel funded in your plan IN ADDITION to your allocated therapy hours.

Speech therapy doesn’t always need to happen in a clinic! You can create meaningful and fun language development activities right at home. This week’s home therapy idea: 'Story Time with a Twist.' 📚🎨
Choose a favorite storybook, and as you read, pause to ask your child to predict what happens next, or have them create their own ending. Not only does this boost comprehension, but it also builds language skills!
