🌙 3 Tips for Improving Your Neurodivergent Teen's Sleep 🌙

Does your teen struggle to settle at night? You’re not alone. Here are some gentle, effective strategies for better rest:

1️⃣ Create a Calming Pre-Bed Routine:
Limit screen time, dim the lights, and include calming activities like reading or listening to music to help ease them into sleep mode.

2️⃣ Craft a Cozy Sleep Environment:
Neurodivergent teens can be sensitive to surroundings. Try soothing elements like a weighted blanket, soft bedding, or white noise to help them feel comfortable and relaxed.

3️⃣ Adjust Bedtime Gradually:
Consistency is key! Slowly bring bedtime forward, one step at a time, to help them adjust without pressure. Gentle breathing exercises or calming sensory tools can also help.

💤 At Therapy 4 Learning’s Sleep Clinic, we specialise in gentle, practical sleep solutions for neuro-divergent children and teens. We work with you to create routines and environments that fit your child’s needs for restful, rejuvenating sleep.

We help kids with ongoing sleep issues, including kids with Autism, ASD and Anxiety.

🌙 We provide gentle sleep training that addresses the sensory, emotional and developmental needs of children aged 2 to 18.

Programs are individualised to meet your family's needs.
Services are provided via telehealth, and are eligible for NDIS and medicare rebates.

Co-Sleeping is a very common strategy used by parents, but at some point we want our children to settle themselves to sleep and sleep independently in their own beds. We can help even if your child has ASD, ADHD, Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, Childhood trauma, an intellectual disability or is non verbal. 🌙

Co-sleeping may seem like a comforting solution but it can actually create challenges when it comes to developing healthy sleep habits. Here's why:

1️⃣ Difficulty with Sleep Independence: Children often struggle with sleep independence, and co-sleeping can reinforce the reliance on a parent to fall asleep. This can make it harder for them to learn how to self-soothe and sleep on their own.

2️⃣ Sensory Sensitivities: Kids can have heightened sensory sensitivities, and sharing a bed may increase discomfort due to noise, movement, or light. This can disrupt sleep patterns for both the child and the parent.

3️⃣ Behavioural Impacts: While co-sleeping might seem comforting, it can sometimes lead to behavioural issues, such as increased anxiety or difficulty transitioning to bedtime routines as the child grows older.

With patience and consistency, sleep training can help your child feel secure in their own sleep space, improving both their sleep quality and overall well-being. 🌟
