Birth trauma Australia - Held

Birth trauma Australia - Held We aim to hear and acknowledge what often remains unspoken about women and men's experiences of birth and early parenting. We provide that space for you.

The Held team believe that being pregnant and giving birth of any kind can trigger emotions we where not prepared for or that we did not expected. We feel that every parent, new or seasoned has a right to discuss their experiences in an environment that is supportive, non-judgmental and understanding. We are a team of highly skilled mental health professionals who have lived experiences with their own traumatic births and adjustments to parenthood which means we truly understand the emotions felt by others. We provide professional pregnancy, birth and relationship counselling services, and we are adjustment and transitional specialist. We also have additional postgraduate training in trauma interventions. We offer face to face consultations in our offices in Melbourne and also via telephone counselling so that we can reach rural and remote parents as well as interstate families. All families, no matter what the format are equally supported and encouraged to seek support including couples, single parents, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age or race. FAMILY is FAMILY! Some of our services attract a medicare rebate if specific criteria is met. if you are pregnant or have been in the past 12 months we can offer 3 rebateable sessions. We can provide you with a letter to take to the GP explaining what item number ot is. You do not require a mental health care plan, just a referral letter. Please contact us at held@birthtraumaaustralia..com for further info and fee schedules.

Dear all, I have been accidentally absent from the page. My laptop blew up and with it all access to Facebook as i have many many accounts and emails (some expired) that i could not for the life of me get back into the page site! But alas, i have a new battery and my laptop saved the password so im able to get back in. I have many messages to respond to and those who know me, know im never someone to ignore anyones messages etc so please accept my explanation and apology if you felt i was purposely ignoring you. The format of the page seems to have changed, so i need to work out how to get it back to what i recognize, or adapt to what i think may be a FB update change in my absence. ### Thanks Lindsey

Slightly a side topic, however highlights the underlying assumption from medics that women's pain is an exaggerated pain in every form, and men's pain is obviously worse and more important.

John Guillebaud, professor of reproductive health at University College London, revealed this week that research shows period pain can be as “bad as having a heart attack”. He said: “Men don’t get it and it hasn’t been given the centrality it should have. I do believe it’s something that should be t...

This first nurse’s comment gives us a pretty accurate peephole into an operating system that tells traumatized women, over and over: “Stop talking.”

It was my youngest 3rd birthday party today and this cake represents her perfectly!
It was an absolute shocker of a pregnancy, one that has meant it's our last, which has been sad but we manged 1014 days breastfeeding which was wonderful for us after such a tough pregnancy. Today with friends and family we smiled, laughed and danced! Ironically I can't walk now so I'm in bed, just like pregnancy. .. my bodies way of giving me a sly dig... However at least I'm not vomiting!

Somtimes we go into birth with an assumption that the birthing professionals will have our back. After all, it is their job to do that. To make us feel safe, important and an active participant in our own birth. Then bam. The opposite happens. We're silenced, ignored, overpowered, belittled and even mocked. And we're left feeling assaulted both physically and emotionally then silenced again with 'at least you have a healthy baby bu****it'.

Birth is vulnerable. But we want it to have the same vulnerability as falling In love... something that is tender and exciting. The mood of birth should not be the vulnerability of danger or assault. As a birth professional image your role as playing apart in a mother falling in love with her child. Tread delicately and watch. The things is, not doing this can impact a mothers resources to fall in love. It gets pushed out of reach as the aftermath of the birth clouds life. And that's not fair.
Be an ally. There's plenty wonderful birth professionals out there who can teach you. Never forget the real reason you're there xx Lindsey
