One of my favorite people recently told me,
There’s an ā€œInstagram Shannonā€ and then there's the ā€œReal Shannonā€. (No harm intended.)

I think about this a lot—

I thought I'd try to right something down about it. So here you go.

Hey guys, my name is Shannon, Shaz, or Shan.

I play a thousand different characters,
Autonomously shifting, adapting, creating—
A mind that sculpts itself
To fit the context it stands in.
Everything I do is autonomous.

I use what I’ve learned in the past to create the present,
Threading myself through time.
A pattern woven into the universe,
Creating new patterns through observation.

I am a part of the universe,
And at the same time,
I create the universe—
The observer and the architect.

I’ll never know everything,
But that only means
I’ll never run out of things to learn.

I’m not sure where my life will take me,
But that’s the beauty in it.

I’ll only ever get there
One step at a time.

I understand that sometimes
The way I act is out of my control,
But I still have to face the consequences of my own actions.

Treat me right—
I’ll do the same to you.

I’m cocky—
Because it gives me the confidence to do what I need to do.
I’m cute—
Wake up and cuddle my rabbit type s**t.
I’m ruthless—
If I feel threatened.
I’m relentless—
The hardest worker I’ve ever met.
I’m the saddest.
I’m the happiest.
I’m caring.
I don’t give a f**k.
I’m up late—
Listening to the most renowned scientists:
Neuroscience.
Biology.
Psychology.
AI.
Physics.
I need to learn.
I’m off to bed early—
To give my body the rest it needs.

I’ve thought about this
Since I was a child.

I can’t spend too long explaining myself,
I might just end up explaining you, to you.

To you, I am a reflection of your previous experience,
But that’s not me.

To me, you are a reflection of my previous experience,
But that’s not you.

I am you.
You are me.
Only our experiences divide us.

In the end, what matters to you
Isn’t who I am,
But the story that you tell yourself
About who you think I am
And what you think I can do for you.

This year I've fallen in love with the Neuroscientists, Lisa Feldman Barretts work.

This Quote - ā€œYour brain is not reacting to the world. It’s predicting and constructing your experience of the world, based on what you have learnt from your past.ā€

In other words, your brain constantly draws from what it’s used to. So if you’re in an environment full of Fitness and Mental Health advocates, your brain creates, thoughts, feelings and actions that reflect that environment. When it comes to fitness, those small predictions, made over and over, are what lead to prolonged progress.

So how do we create a "fitness based environment for ourselves" Well we all look at our phones for hours on end each day. Our instagram feeds have become a huge part of our environment. We are in a literal sense "brain-washing" ourselves every time we open our phones. So, find a bunch of fitness followers you can relate to, follow them, listen to them talk about their passions and let it influence you! Or even better, find a coach, get to know them, make them apart of your day to day.

When your environment supports your goals, your actions will too.
