Shivonne Cammell - Child & Family Counselling

Shivonne Cammell - Child & Family Counselling Providing play therapy and counselling services for children and families to improve mental health and resilience.

Providing clinical supervision for social workers, counsellors, play therapists and other allied health professionals. I am a Clinical Social Worker and Supervisor (AMHSW), and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (APTA), specialising in Child and Family Practice and Play Therapy. Over the past 15 years I have worked across complex settings, including foster care, child protection, family support services, sexual abuse, and specialist trauma counselling services. With a strong interest in neurobiology and the impact of trauma on child development and emotional well-being, I support children with processing trauma and grief, developing self esteem and resilience, enhancing family relationships and adjusting to new social circumstances in positive ways. I believes strongly in partnering with parents and families to support their child’s development at home and to develop further knowledge and tools to better understand their children’s emotional needs and how to respond effectively.

Please feel free to contact me for a confidential discussion as to how I can support your family.

I work with clinicians in child and adolescent mental health.

Sometimes the hardest part of this work isn’t what we do with the child or family (though that’s definitely complex!). Often it’s all the extra thoughts in our heads - the uncertainty and risk, the worry that we don’t know enough, that we need more training, that everyone else is more competent.

Supervision is a space to talk things through, work through tricky parts, and notice what’s influencing your decisions and reactions with children and families. It’s a place to slow down, sort through doubts, and leave feeling a bit more grounded in your own judgment.

I have a few supervision spaces open for clinicians who want reflective and supportive individual supervision. Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to discuss further.

Happy Saturday! Hope everyone got some time to rest and enjoy the sunshine. Here in Melbourne it's sunny and we made the most of exploring and enjoying the last of summer. ❤️

Work is busy, and often heavy. We all know the importance of self - care, but setting intentional boundaries and taking time to slow down and recharge is often hard to prioritise. I hope you all get a chance to do so this weekend. .

The world of Winnie-the-Pooh offers a gentle and powerful way of understanding play therapy.

The Hundred Acre Wood is a separate, protected world. It is not quite home and not quite reality, yet it is always deeply connected to it. This closely mirrors the play therapy room. It is a safe, symbolic space where children can explore their inner world through play, imagination and story.

In play therapy, children are not expected to explain their feelings using words. Like Pooh and his friends, they express worries, fears, hopes and relationships through characters, play themes and repetition. This allows children to explore difficult experiences at a safe emotional distance, whilst being held within a trusting and attuned therapeutic relationship.

Crucially, what happens in the playroom does not remain there. Over time, the emotional regulation, confidence and understanding developed through play gently transfer back into the child’s everyday life, at home, at school and within relationships.

A much-loved quote by A. A. Milne captures the heart of this process:

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

Play therapy helps children rediscover these truths about themselves. Not by telling them, but by allowing them to experience it through play, relationship and felt safety.

Play is not ‘just play’.

It is how children make sense of their world and how deep, lasting change begins.
