Happy Easter from our family to yours ♥️

After last years crazy sugar crashes, the Easter bunny left plaster eggs to paint & just a couple small chocolates each. Some much more even moods this year!

Would love some more ideas for next year.

How do you celebrate Easter for the little ones while reducing sugar intake?

Can I let you in on a little secret?

We all know by now that screen time isn’t great for our children ... BUT have you ever considered that using it to entertain your children will rob YOU of precious quiet or alone time?

WHAT?!?!? I hear you say. Alone time is exactly WHY I use screen time to entertain my children!

Let me explain. Screen time decreases your child’s ability to entertain themselves, to use their imagination & play independently. So the more you ‘entertain’ your children with a screen, the more you will need to continue to entertain them.

AND SO the cycle of watching more & more increases! And the ability to play independently decrease.

Keep an eye on my stories for tips & a run down on how we went about cutting screen time out completely.

*** Comforters ***

I love comforters for baby sleep. Why? Quite simply, they provide comfort with minimal parental intervention.

Unlike with a dummy, a baby is able to find their comforter and use to resettle during the night from a young age. A comforter is easier for them to find & doesn’t require the same level of fine motor skills to replace.

When choosing a comforter...
➡️ Find one that is a natural, breathable fabric such as cotton, bamboo or muslin. Babies tend to suck on and rub their comforter over their face.
➡️ One that is big enough to make it easier for your baby to find during the night.
➡️ Easily washable AND replaceable. Better still, buy a second one and put away for back up. (Hint, don’t let your toddler know you have two or they will demand both for sleep).

See my stories for how to introduce a comforter to your baby.

* Safe Sleep Guidelines recommend not introducing a comforter (or any other toy in baby’s sleep space) to your baby until 7 months. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

I’m too nervous to give my baby that!

A common phrase I hear a lot. Tackling texture is a development milestone in the skill of learning to eat!

Research shows the introduction of different textures at the beginning of your weaning journey (before 10 months), means your baby is less likely to develop an aversion to textured foods or become fussy in the future! Plus it supports lateral tongue movement which is a key component in mastering the skill of eating.

Here are a few options to help you get started
➡️ Steamed (extra soft) broccoli, carrots, zucchini (I like to cut in long pieces so baby can hold onto them easily).
➡️ Toast (cut in fingers, babies will tend to suck on it and make soft enough to swallow)
➡️Avocado & Banana

Finger food is also great for practising those fine motor skills AND allowing your baby to be an active participant in their meals.

Are you (or do you plan on) doing purées or baby lead weaning? For me, I love using a combination of both. Having my babies interested and active participants in their meals, plus helping to fill them up with some purées too.

Save & tag your fellow Mumma friends!

These suggestions are to encourage optimal night time sleep and a happy baby. If your baby sits outside of these and you and your baby are HAPPY with their sleep (both day & night) there is no reason to change!

How many naps your baby has will vary depending on their temperament, how much sleep they have overnight and their sleep environment/habits.

Can’t understand why your baby has started waking up soon after going to sleep?

The beginning of the night (7pm - midnight) is when babies sleep drive is the strongest (thanks melatonin 😴). Meaning it is usually the longest stretch of deep sleep for our little ones.

However you may find (particularly from 4 months onwards) that your baby who had started to do a lovely long stretch at the beginning of the night begins to wake up in the first couple of hours after going to sleep.

The most common cause is a baby that has gone to bed overtired, or with too long awake before bed.

Try putting your baby to bed 30-60mins earlier or adjusting their nap times.

** Breastfeeding to sleep **

Did you know that breastfeeding a baby to sleep is biologically one of the most natural occurrences in the world?

Breastmilk contains an essential amino acid called tryptophan. The human body uses tryptophan to produce melatonin, the SLEEP hormone.

Breastmilk is designed to quite literally send your baby to sleep!

But all the books tell you your baby has to feed, play & then sleep, to sleep well.

Here’s a little secret, that’s not always true. For some, yes you do eventually need to separate breastfeeding and sleep to help them sleep well. However for many a few simple strategies to go along with breastfeeding before sleep is all that is needed.

As well as helping send your baby to sleep, they are likely to sleep for longer on a full stomach.

The 4th Trimester 💕

They grew inside us for 9-10 months, gently adjusting to life outside the womb takes time and practice for both Mum & Baby.

Healthy sleep habits can start being created from birth, without depriving you or your baby of the cuddles!
