Relax your chicken!

This is how to give better massages at home.

Let's break down technique into something simple you can understand. The techniques here are focusing on cross fiber technique - you're choosing angles to massage against the grain of a muscle.

Use the anatomy to see the direction in which the fibers flow, and then imagine that you're massaging across those fibers.

When you massage across the fibers its more aggressive, this creates a more therapeutic release.

Less mechanical = More human

How to stop your hands from hurting when massaging at home while making the massage flow. There are many ways to do this.

Use the heel of your palm with body weight - its the least amount of effort you need to put into a massage while still creating depth and targeting knots. And that's a good thing!

You last longer
It feels better
You flow better.

Less mechanical = more human

Do you know how to join your deep tissue techniques together?

Use this flow. There's technique to it. To make it feel good, create the hero stroke, its always slower and always deeper. On the back the hero stroke ought to push away from you, its easier this way.

Pause at the end to create an accent!

Brush back to the top. This is always faster and lighter. (it's a contrast to the hero stroke)

At the top, scoop back to the beginning.

I given foot massages in every imaginable place in the house (including massage table)...

This is my favourite position, is so comfy for both of us.

Finding comfort when massaging will be the hardest part of the massage. You should try it this way, it'll take practice but when you get it working its absolute bliss!

What does dry fascia sound like?

The crunch that you hear when massaging is caused by tight fascia "and also tendons."

Now fascia doesn't dry up like toast, there's always significant lubrication within the tissues. But "dryness" is helpful to think of as a guide to locating knots and working on those parts of the body. "It helps you hunt for these trigger points" to release them.

You could also think of these spots as "densification" where a trigger point increases in mass causing pressure in that area creating tightness and pain and radiates through the entire muscle.

Massage helps release this mass and allow for the layers to glide smoothly during movement.

Here's what happens to fascia during a massage.

To simplify it; fascia relies on fluid to help your body move smoothly. Massage can affect how that fluid moves by redistributing fluid away from the area you're massaging and then allowing it to flood back in re-hydrating the tissues.

And with so many layers of fascia it loves all types of massage. From relaxation to really deep tissue.

How to find the biggest knot in your butt. The easy way!

Understanding anatomy as a beginner is hard, but we can make it easier by using “bone” landmarks. Practitioners do this all the time.

You won’t be able to feel the piriformis muscle on yourself using your hands, but you will find it with a tennis ball or lacrosse ball.

Highly recommended: find this knot on your partner. It’ll become a go-to move every time you want to release tension in the glutes.

Fascia explained like we're 8 year olds.

This is the most basic concept of how fascia works, it's an incredibly big topic that we can go into more detail - this is just the beginning to help you understand how fascia works with your muscles.

But fascia is much more involved than just your muscles. It's the connective tissue that binds your body together. Every part of your body.

And the best part, fascia loves massage!

VisualiSATION! I like to study anatomy and picture the muscles under the skin when massaging.
This helps me choose angles to distribute pressure into a muscle.

Follow the fibers and the direction in which they flow.

Golgi tendon organs are sensory receptors located in tendons.

They monitor muscle tension and protect muscles from excessive force by triggering relaxation when tension becomes too high.

We can use this system to create relaxation in tense muscles through massage.

We're taught to mostly massage muscle. You'll notice in many of my massages I'm working attachment points. It works really well to reduce tension, and even more so when combined with trigger points and relaxation.

The direction of the muscles can tell a lot about the pain and tension you're feeling. This is the basics of neck tension and massage.

For a complex system the massage is really easy. The hard part is understanding why you're experiencing tension.
