Support regulation before expectations

When perfectionism takes over, your child may need:
• Tasks broken into small, clear steps
• Permission to aim for “good enough”
• Help calming their body before re-trying

Progress doesn’t come from pushing harder, it comes from feeling regulated, supported, and understood.

Today we say a heartfelt farewell to Naomee and Liana

Naomee and Liana joined us on placement and quickly became valued members of our team. Both travelled a significant distance to be here each week, a true reflection of their dedication to their clients and to their profession.

At our clinic, we strongly value education, supervision, and the training of emerging clinicians. While placements are temporary by nature, the impact Naomee and Liana have made certainly is not. They have supported their clients with care, professionalism, and warmth, and have contributed so positively to our team culture.

They will be greatly missed by staff and clients alike, and we are so proud to have been part of their professional journey. We wish them every success in the next chapter of their careers!

How parents can help soften perfectionism

✔ Normalise mistakes
✔ Praise effort, not outcomes
✔ Gently reduce comparison

Simple language like “Mistakes help our brains grow” and noticing persistence over performance can make a big difference over time.

Children don’t need to feel perfect, they need to feel safe enough to try.

Perfectionism can show up in lots of ways.

You might notice your child:
• Avoids tasks unless they’re sure they’ll succeed
• Starts work over and over again
• Gets very upset after small mistakes
• Seeks constant reassurance
• Fixates on feedback or criticism
• Compares themselves to siblings or classmates

These behaviours are often signs of anxiety and overwhelm, not stubbornness.

Perfectionism doesn’t come from nowhere.

For many children, it’s driven by:
• A strong need for predictability
• Black-and-white thinking
• Wanting to avoid uncertainty
• Sensory or emotional overload
• Noticing differences between themselves and others

When a child is already working hard to cope, even small mistakes can feel huge in the moment.

Understanding the why helps us respond with compassion, not pressure.

At ANSA Health, we stand with all Australians at this sad time after yesterday's tragedy at Bondi Beach.

Moments like this can stir a wide range of emotions — shock, sadness, anger, fear, or a deep sense of unease. For many, it may also bring up personal memories or concerns for loved ones and community safety. All of these reactions are normal human responses to distressing events.

If today feels heavy, a few simple actions can help steady your nervous system:
*Consider limiting or turning off the news for a while — staying informed is essential, but constant exposure can amplify distress
*Ground yourself in routine — eat regularly, move your body, and prioritise rest
*Reach out to someone you trust and talk things through rather than holding it alone
*Focus on what is within your control — kindness, inclusion, and looking out for one another

We believe strongly in the power of community, compassion, and respectful dialogue. Supporting one another’s well-being is essential to a healthier, safer society for everyone. If you or your team need support, professional help is available — and reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Our thoughts are with all those affected, and we have clinicians available to help if you need support: https://online.katina.com.au/public/waitlist/bb9a6460-cd09-4ab8-abb8-43586e5d8840

Does your child struggle with needing things to be “just right”?

Perfectionism in children isn’t about wanting to do well, it’s often about feeling unsafe when things aren’t exact.
For many children, mistakes can feel overwhelming rather than helpful.

If your child avoids tasks, melts down over small errors, or feels distressed when things don’t go to plan, this might be perfectionism, not defiance.

The good news? With the right support, children can learn that mistakes are safe, expected, and part of learning.
