✨Longing for your sleep to be a bit better? 😴

Sleep hygiene refers to using healthy habits, behaviours and environmental factors to improve your sleep. Small changes can make a big difference in balancing your circadian rhythm and getting you a good night sleep.

Some simple tips:
- Try to expose yourself to some natural light in the morning by opening all the blinds, stepping outside and trying to catch the morning sun.
- Avoid artificial light in the evening in the form of bright fluorescent bulbs and screens. If you can't avoid it then try to use blue light blocking glasses.
- Aim to wake and sleep at the same time each day.
- Avoid caffeine after midday.
- Create a calming evening routine that might include taking a bath, reading a book, journalling or meditating.

There are many herbs and supplements that may be right for you to help your body fall into a much needed deep sleep. They can be beneficial in balancing your circadian rhythm and regulating hormone production.

✨Have you heard of the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC)?🍽️

Our digestive tract uses wave-like muscle contractions to sweep the digestive tract clean. This process removes dead cells, food and bacteria left over in our digestive tract and has a really important role in keeping our digestion in balance. It is important for preventing the overgrowth of bacteria in our gut, which can lead to unpleasant symptoms like bloating, excess gas, pain, diarrhoea and constipation.

So have you ever noticed your stomach feeling not quite right after you have spent all day grazing? The MMC takes 90-120 minutes to complete a cycle and it also requires us to fast for activation, otherwise the focus of the gut will be on digestion rather than cleaning.

So to allow the MMC to fully benefit you, try leaving 3-5 hours between meals with no snacking and make use of an easy overnight fast between dinner and breakfast. This will ensure that your body is able to cleanse and reset to the best of its' ability and you may notice a really beneficial effect on your digestion.

Yoghurt is a nourishing and healthy food. It contains an abundance of probiotics, which help to balance intestinal flora and support digestion. There is also evidence of how a healthy intestinal flora has a beneficial impact on mental health, immune function and blood sugar regulation. This is a vegan option for those looking to avoid dairy.

You’ll need:
~ 1 can of coconut milk
~ A probiotic in a sachet or capsule you can open

Simply:
~ Warm the coconut milk until it has a smooth consistency.
~ Remove from the heat and stir in your probiotic powder (one sachet or two capsules).
~ Stir until smooth then transfer to a sterile glass jar.
~ Cover with a muslin cloth and wrap with some towels to help the fermentation.
~ Taste it every 12-24 hours with a clean spoon until it reaches your desired taste.
~ Once it is the taste you desire, stir the yoghurt until it is smooth, put a lid on your jar and store in the fridge.

Enjoy your delicious home-made yogurt!

Moringa ~ maybe you've seen it in powdered form at a health food shop or online. But did you know that it is actually a fast growing tree?

It has a high nutritional content and particularly high antioxidant levels, which help to protect our cells from damage. Eating fresh moringa straight from the tree will yield the highest health benefits, but its powdered form is much easier to obtain and can be added to foods in a variety of ways:

~ Add to drinking water with a squeeze of citrus
~ Add to your smoothies
~ Sprinkle over foods like scrambled eggs, salads, soups and inside sandwiches
~ Add to baked goods like muffins or breads

✨Lavender ~ a fragrant tonic for the nervous system🪻

It has a long history of use, popular across continents for its appealing aroma. It has been used in perfume and incense, as well as medicinally for its numerous properties, including antimicrobial, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant anxiolytic actions, among others. It is still used today by naturopaths to support a variety of conditions, including anxiety, cognitive decline, depression, headache, insomnia and restlessness.

There are many species of lavender, and while none are considered toxic to humans in low doses, species with high camphor content are generally avoided for culinary purposes due to the bitter taste. Lavandula angustifolia is recognised as the most palatable and recommended for consumption due to its low camphor content and floral flavours.

Make sure you know which species of lavender you are using, that it is food grade and if it is growing fresh, that it is pesticide and chemical free.

Enjoy its beautiful aroma and let it calm you down. 🫖🪻🧘‍♀️

✨Is butter the enemy?

It’s a popular delicacy that has certainly been victimised in the past.

But… it’s not all bad. Butter is actually full of nutrients that can benefit our health.

First, it’s important to understand a little about fats and cholesterol. Our bodies need both types of cholesterol to function ~ LDL (saturated fats, often called “bad” cholesterol) and HDL (unsaturated fats, often called “good” cholesterol).

In reality, there’s no true “good” or “bad” ~ we need both for balance. The issue arises when our modern diets contain too many LDL fat sources, which can lead to plaque build-up in the arteries and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. HDL fats, on the other hand, help remove excess cholesterol from the arteries and carry it to the liver for disposal.

So… a balance of both fat sources is essential, as they work together.

LDL helps transport vital cholesterol around the body, supporting cell membrane structure, hormone production, and vitamin D synthesis, while HDL fights inflammation and helps prevent blood clots.

The fats found in butter also support brain health and increase satiety, while its high concentration of vitamins and minerals help strengthen immunity and support heart health.

So enjoy your butter guilt free! Just make sure your diet is also rich in unsaturated fat sources like coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, seeds, salmon, and avocados. And remember, grass-fed butter is best. It’s a nutrient-dense food, so enjoy it in moderation.

✨You always have one nostril more open than the other ~ approximately every 1-4 hours you will notice a change in airflow. 👃

While its puropose is not fully understood, it is thought to be your body's way of keeping your nostrils moist and hydrated. Alterations in this natural cycle have been linked to various diseases, showing just how important balance is. 🌿

✨In yoga the nadis are energy channels that carry prana, lifeforce energy, around the body. Ida and Pingala nadis are both important and are associated with masculine and feminine energy.

Nadi Shodhana is a practice to help to bring your nostril flow and nadis into balance. 🕉

Try it for yourself: 🧘

~ Sit comfortably.
~ Place your ring finger over your left nostril and your thumb over your right nostril.
~ Inhale through both nostrils.
~ Close your right nostril with your thumb.
~ Exhale through your left, inhale through your left.
~ Open your right nostril, close your left with your ring finger.
~ Exhale through your right, inhale through your right.
~ Continue like this for a few minutes.
~ Finish with an exhale through your left nostril.

How a naturopath has their chai ☕️

My daily chai ritual is a moment to slow down and nourish. Chai spices support healthy digestion, circulation and warmth in the body, helping to gently energise and balance.

I use a naturally caffeine~free chai spice mix that includes dandelion root, then I add maca and reishi for a supportive energy boost. I love to use almond or oat milk. and sweeten with honey.

🌿 Dandelion root supports gentle liver detoxification and digestion
🍠 Maca helps balance hormones, boost energy and support mood
🍄 Reishi promotes calm focus and steady vitality ~ no jitters, just balance

A perfect way to enjoy a little ritual that supports both energy and relaxation.
Because sometimes the best pick-me-up is the one that keeps you grounded. 🌸

🍯Did you know that honey is a really effective treatment for a cough?🐝

It is a safe and effective alternative to conventional treatment that offers symptomatic relief for upper respiratory tract infections and has antimicrobial properties. It is a great option to take just before bed to settle a cough and get a good nights sleep.

For children and adults over 12 months of age take 1/2-1tsp before bed.

Enjoy
