This week I’m dropping in with my food highlights from the last fortnight:

🫒 Zucchini slice with salad + greek yoghurt with h**p seeds, flaxseeds, honey, kiwi & blackberries. Prepping a zucchini slice on a Sunday always makes my week easier!

🍠 Prepping black rice & sweet potato for my week so I can make up satisfying salad bowls or wraps in a flash. Served here with tuna, cos lettuce & chilli kidney beans. Hot tip - black rice has a much better texture when you cook it yourself, compared to the microwave pouches.

🍌 The ol’ cook once, eat twice trick: leftover buckwheat pasta bolognaise for work lunch, with a banana + greek yoghurt bowl as snacks.

🥜 Low effort snacks ready to go in the fridge: medjool dates stuffed with choc protein peanut butter.

🍒 Cherry season!

I’ve been loving getting creative with food again lately - which for me is a big sign that I’m starting to feel like myself again after a period of dancing on the edge of burnout ☺️

Please stop thinking that exhaustion is just ‘part of getting older/being a parent/working hard/modern life’… or that being so busy you feel like you’re hanging by a thread is a badge of honour.

Seriously though - if you were to rate how busy you are out of 10, what would your answer be?

Exhaustion can be a bit of a wake up call that life is a little out of balance, but if you’re not coping like you usually would there may be more going on at a deeper level.

Whether it’s key nutrient deficiencies leaving you out of breath & feeling weak, an undiagnosed thyroid condition that’s popped up, or chronic stress resulting in cortisol dysregulation, fatigue & insomnia… it’s worth investigating WHY you feel this way!

The busy seasons of life can also mean your body just needs some extra support so that you can get through it without collapsing - hello nutritional & herbal medicine 🤝

Whatever it may be, it’s my job to help you find the reason and support you in feeling better - naturally!

Don’t be afraid to book in if you know you need my help, that’s what I’m here for 💚🌿

Same dinner on repeat? I hear you, it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut!

Here are some ideas to mix it up:

1. Pan fried salmon with ginger spiked mashed sweet potato & greens. Just Thai seasoning sprinkled on the salmon.
2. Mexican style chicken tortilla stack. Like a spicy chicken lasagne!
3. Chicken & broccoli pesto buckwheat pasta.
4. Asian style vermicelli noodle soup.
5. Lamb steaks with sweet potato wedges & steamed greens.

Stories like this are why I will always always ALWAYS check what’s actually been tested via standard blood tests🕵️‍♀️

This person had the added expense of a neurologist referral and further investigations and still, noone asked about diet OR tested his B12 levels!!!

If your B12 levels get low enough, it starts to cause damage to the nerve sheaths of the long nerves and can result in numbness and tingling in the hands and/or feet. Catch it early on and it can be reversed.

Other symptoms of deficiency include headaches, fatigue, weakness, mood changes, palpitations, cognitive issues and memory loss.

B12 levels decline gradually over months or years, as the liver can store up to 3-5 years supply. In this example, a little bit of chicken and fish (lower B12 sources than something like red meat or liver) was enough to keep B12 hanging in there over the years… but it only took a few months to show symptoms after going fully vegan.

Modern naturopathy is an integrative practice, not some whacky alternative you should be ashamed to seek out. We love to join the dots between different symptoms and body systems and actually take the time to listen to your health story in order to do so. We are trained to really explore the physical manifestations of deficiencies so that we can ensure the body is provided with the nutrients it needs to repair and restore balance ⚖️

Only a few more weeks of consults left for 2025 if you need my help! Let’s get you feeling great now so you can start 2026 feeling fresh 🤩

Where are your current habits leading you?

How have your habits led you to where you are now?

What small habit can you change today that could change your trajectory?

A 1% change in an airplanes flight path can result in landing on another continent - what small daily habit could compound and give you the future changes you are looking for?

Some food for thought.

Lately I’ve been swapping some of my scroll time with audiobooks… hot tip - search for titles on Spotify premium, you can clean the house and expand your mind at the same time!

I’ve read Atomic Habits a couple of times and find that revisiting it is always a good idea when you’re thinking about your goals and how you can move towards them. Have you read it?

Have you noticed that your B12 tests look a little different in the last few months? 🤔

Suddenly you’re seeing something called ‘homocysteine’ on the results, but no active B12?

This is because there have been Medicare changes around what they will cover… and with active B12 being on the more expensive side - it didn’t make the cut 😳

Previously most labs would automatically run active B12 if your standard B12 result was low or borderline (generally under 400). So now, as a workaround, when your B12 results are under 400 the labs are running homocysteine to give more context to that suboptimal B12 - which involves more complex nutritional biochemistry.

If a homocysteine result is high, it can indicate that B12, B9 or B6 are insufficient. This is because they play key roles in the metabolism and conversion of homocysteine via the methylation cycle 👉🏽without them in sufficient levels to fulfil their roles, homocysteine levels can rise.

But please also know this - your B12 levels may not actually be tested at all as part of a general check up, you often need to present with key symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, numbness in hands/feet, mood changes or cognitive issues. Always get a copy or at least ask what has been tested!

It’s important to know that things are always changing under the Medicare rebates and if we want the full picture sometimes we have to be willing to pay for some tests privately.

If you need help interpreting your test results, or with a referral for further testing, make sure you book an appointment and send any recent results through prior🕵️‍♀️

TUNA… ON A HANDFUL OF PLAIN CRACKERS FOR LUNCH?! Not around here 🙈

Girl, that’s a snack and we can do better than that! You also deserve to take a minute to eat a decent, balanced meal 💪🏽

Eating on the lighter side earlier in the day (or skipping meals altogether) can lead to uncontrollable cravings in the evening - often when you might find you can’t control yourself around that block of chocolate, bag of lollies or packet of chips. Something I hear all too often!

In recent weeks I’ve had lots of chats with clients about “crowding out the crap” - the idea that if we actually just increase our health promoting foods like vegetables to hit 5+ serves per day, we reduce the space in our diet for the processed foods.

‘Volume eating’ is a similar concept where you bulk out your meals with those low starch/low calorie veggies in higher volumes, adding in extra nutrients and fibre to feel more satiated.

Anyway, with the tuna as your protein source here, I’d keep it to 2-3 serves per week so we aren’t overdoing the mercury. If you can, switch it up here and there and utilise some of those higher omega-3 options like salmon, mackerel and sardines for extra anti-inflammatory and skin hydrating benefits.

Some of the ways I use tuna as a base for lunch include:

1. Air fried sweet potato cubes + frozen green veg + tuna + chilli flakes.
2. Leftover roast potato & pumpkin + tuna + rocket + Edgell Snack Time (this was the red kidney beans with chilli & olive oil).
3. Roasted sweet potato wedges + tuna + kaleslaw mix with seeds.
4. Kaleslaw + tuna + shaved parmesan in a wrap + an apple.
5. Corn thins + mashed avocado, topped with chilli tuna mixed with mayo (usually with some baby cucumbers alongside).
6. Steamed sweet potato & broccolini + tuna, drizzled with pesto.

Do you have a go-to way to jazz up a tin of tuna for lunch?
