The Apron Project has been a beacon of hope since February 2015, empowering women and children escaping domestic and family violence through the collective efforts of over 200 artists worldwide. Their contributions of more than 400 intricately stitched, painted, and beaded aprons have raised over AUD100,000, symbolizing a powerful movement towards positive change.

'The Apron Project' - NSW, Australia
Title: 'Through the Blue'
Materials: Acrylic on White Cotton Apron
Artist: Elizabeth Ellen

Artist Statement:

This apron embodies a profound promise: beyond fear lies limitless possibility. I've crafted a serene blue expanse with a single wave, creating a sanctuary for survivors of domestic violence. The vast sky represents calmness, patience, and the unwavering light at the end of a tunnel. The solitary wave signifies movement, momentum, and the unrelenting push forward.

My artwork honors the unyielding courage of those who persevere through uncertainty. The deliberate minimalism and uncluttered composition offer clarity and solace, inviting reflection and awareness. This apron is not a destination; it's a companion on the journey towards healing and empowerment. It urges us to acknowledge the resilience of survivors, to recognize their endurance as a testament to their strength, and to take action through awareness, conversation, and support.

I offer this painted apron to The Apron Project with the hope that it will inspire, raise resources, and ignite a sense of conviction in all who experience it - that forward momentum is not only possible but inevitable, and that together, we can create a brighter future.

The greatest failure is staying frozen while your dreams wait at the door. Fire up your courage — action is the alchemy that turns fear into fuel.

This year, don’t wait for someone else’s calendar to give you permission. Whether you align your fresh start with Chinese New Year (17/2/26) or the Spring Solstice (30/3/26) decide now: will you rise, risk, and become the person your goals deserve?

Ask yourself:
- Who will you be when you take bold action and win?
- Who will you remain if you let fear keep you small?
- If you stumble, will you stay down — or square your shoulders, learn, and move forward?

Courage isn’t the absence of fear — it’s choosing the next step in spite of it. Take that step. Make the choice. Begin again and again until success is your habit.

I’m at a stage where I don’t bother arguing anymore. If someone tells me there are eight days in a week, fine — I won’t fight it. It’s not about giving up; it’s about protecting my peace. Too many of us spend years trying to be understood by people who just don’t want to understand. One more try won’t change them. My calm matters more than being right.

How to make that choice:
1) Walk away: If a talk turns ugly, say “I’m leaving” and step out. Removing yourself sends a clear message — your peace comes first.
2) Use a short line: Have a go-to phrase like “Let’s agree to disagree” or “I won’t argue.” It stops things fast without drama.
3) Spend the time on you: Instead of arguing, go for a walk, do something creative, or call someone who supports you. You’ll feel better and stronger.

Journaling and Communication Prompts

Try journaling the following questions each afternoon at the close of your day, then practice using these questions with others.

Connection Time questions to ask yourself as a journalling exercise each afternoon after work, then begin learning communication strategies to get the right information without needing to solve other peoples problems as this only creates a cycle of sabotage as you want to learn to walk beside people instead of trying to ‘rescue’.

1: How was your day?
2: What went well for you today?
3: What didn’t go so well today?
4: What did you want to achieve?
5: What do you need to do differently next time, to get the results you want?

Do not be tempted to rescue them, remember to walk beside them and lead by example.

—————-

1. What am I grateful for in this moment?
2. How can I turn challenges into opportunities?
3. What positive lessons can I learn from today’s experiences?
4. How can I focus on what I can control rather than what I can’t?
5. What small step can I take today toward my goals?

Communication Questions - Boundaries
- [ ] What do you/I need?
- [ ] What do you want?
- [ ] What will you not tolerate?
