Are you sick and tired of sore heels?

Well you will be glad to know you are not alone!
Heel pain in children and adults is one of the most common foot conditions podiatrists see in the clinic. The area of the heel looks very straight forward on the outside, however under the skin there is a very complex but dynamic network of bones, ligaments, nerves and fatty padding.

"Heel pain" is a blanket term that covers approximately 20 different conditions associated with heel pain. As such it is vital to conduct a thorough history and examination determine the exact cause of your pain. On some occasions x-rays or further imaging may be required to further asses more complicated conditions.

Once a diagnosis has been made, a custom treatment plan will be tailored, to account your individual needs so you can get on with doing what you do best, living life to the fullest without a sore foot.

Arch Pain ?

Arch pain is a common foot problem that can be caused by a variety of factors, including,

- Overuse or excessive standing or walking
- Injury such as a one off or small repetitious strain to the feet
- Poor footwear or unsupportive shoes
- Structural issues, such as flat feet or high arches
- Increased loading of the feet
- Ageing and wear and tear on the feet

Here are some ways to help alleviate arch pain:

1. Rest and ice. Resting the affected foot and applying ice for a few minutes at few times throughout the day can help reduce pain and inflammation .

2. Wearing supportive footwear with a firm heel counter, arch support and cushioning can help alleviate pain.

3. Stretching: Stretching exercises can help improve the flexibility and reduce tension in the muscles and tendons of the foot.

4. Orthotic inserts: Just like glasses for eyes custom fitted orthotics can help support the arch of the foot and relieve pain.

5. Pain medication : Over the counter pain medication such as ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Check with your local pharmacist if you have questions.

If your arch pain persist or is sever, it is important to see your health care professional such as a podiatrist or doctor for a thorough assessment and diagnosis so a treatment plan can be implemented.

HOW DOES PREGNANCY AFFECT THE FEET?

Pregnancy can have a number of effects on a woman's feet, including...

- Swelling: Pregnant women may experience swelling in their feet and ankles due to the increased pressure on the blood vessels and the accumulation of fluid in the tissues

- Altered Arch height. The increased weight and changes in hormones during pregnancy can cause the arches of the feet to flatten, leading to pain and discomfort.

- Varicose veins: The pressure on the blood vessels in the legs during pregnancy can cause varicose veins to develop which can become uncomfortable.

- Numbness and tingling: Some women may experience numbness and tingling in their feet due to the compression of nerves in the lower back and legs.

- Change in shoe size: The swelling and change in foot structure during pregnancy can cause a womens shoe size to increase temporarily, sometimes this is permanent.

- Planter fasciitis: The added weight and changes in foot function during pregnancy can also contribute to strain in the main ligament under the foot. This condition may cause pain in the heel and the bottom of the foot.

TO HELP MANAGE AND MINIMISE THE EFFECTS PREGNANCY MAY HAVE ON THE FEET, WOMEN CAN TAKE SEVERAL STEPS, SUCH AS:

- Wearing comfortable and supportive shoes. Especially in the last trimester or if the feet are feeling strained.

- Elevating feet when possible especially if noticing swelling in the feet and lower legs. Some times wearing a compression stocking may be recommended to improve blood flow. This would be fitted by a qualified health care provider.

- Regular exercise to improve foot strength and flexibility as it adapts to the changes of pregnancy.

INGROWN TOENAIL PREVENTION

Ingrown toenails can cause a lot of pain and distress.

At Rich River Podiatry we utilise a range of non painful, minimally invasive techniques to treat you ingrown toenails. However, there are ways you can prevent them at home.

At Home Care:

- Some ingrown toenails are unavoidable due to their shape.
Here are some steps you can take to reduce the risk of ingrown toenails...

- Try not to pick at the skin around the nails or your cuticles. Instead use nail scissors to trim the nail and leave 1mm of white nail at the end.

- Use a nail file to round the edges and a cream to keep the skin/cuticles soft.

- Resist the urge to peel of rip there nails if you get a rough edge. Use nail clippers and file the edges instead.

- Try to cut the nails straight across. Do not cut the nail down into the flesh part of the toe. Dont allow nail salon staff to cut down the edges of the nail.

- If you do cut them a little too short and they become tender, give the toe a salt bath every day and apply an antiseptic dressing. Keep all shoe pressure off the toe if possible.

HOW CAN RICH RIVER PODIATRY HELP ?

- Firstly we assess the problem and how if may have started. Then after a through history we create a plan of treatment.

- Treatment may be as simple as using a numbing cream then removing a sharp edge. Footwear assessments will be conducted to ensure you shoes are not contributing to the nail problem.

- Podiatrist might painlessly remove dry skin from around the nail plate. Sometimes we thin a thick or curled nail plate using a special bur to relieve tension around the nail.

- In some cases antibiotics may be required to settle infected toe before conservative care can be started.
If conservative care does not work local aesthetics gan be given to numb the toe and permanently fix the troublesome nail.
