Just published! Creating Healthier Remote Food Retail Stores, Together
In remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, local stores are central to food access—and community health. In a recent collaboration between the Monash University Remote Food Systems Team, nutrition professionals and remote community retail stores, the Store Scout App was used to support retailers in adopting best-practice strategies for healthier food environments.
🛒 The Store Scout App helps assess store practices, provides real-time feedback, and supports co-designed improvements using the 4Ps of marketing: Product, Placement, Price, and Promotion.
📈 Results from 12 communities showed improved store practices and stronger partnerships between health professionals and retailers. This work highlights the power of practical tools like the Store Scout App to support meaningful, community-led change—one shelf at a time.

Registrations are closing soon for our innovative short course: Transforming Retail Food Environments to be Health-Enabling.
The short course is in its fifth year in collaboration with the REFRESH: Next Generation (Centre of Research Excellence in Food Retail Environments for Health), Deakin University’s Institute for Health Transformation and the Global Centre for Preventive Health and Nutrition.
This professional development short course is ideal for those who are looking for the skills and knowledge to transform food environments to be healthier such as public health practitioners, dietitians, and nutritionists.
It was our absolute pleasure to host Prof Kevin Whelan (Kings College London & adjunct Prof in our Dept!) yesterday — a day of discussions at the Victorian Heart Institute and our BASE Facility then a fabulous seminar on his outstanding body of work.
17/06/2025
Lots happening in the Department lately to enhance connectivity - our HDR student Focus Day (complete with team games and lunch), our monthly Nut Nibbles morning tea and our inaugural Book Club evening!
Busy creating a cohesive team environment where we all thrive 🙂✨

We are seeking adult volunteers for a study investigating the effects of chestnuts on blood glucose levels.
This will involve visiting the BASE facility in Notting Hill to consume a meal at each visit - one containing chestnut and the other without - followed by some finger prick blood sampling.
Participants who complete the trial will be in the running to win 2 x cinema vouchers.

We are delighted this course is returning for its fifth year in collaboration with the Centre of Research Excellence in Food Retail Environments for Health (RE-FRESH), Deakin University’s Institute for Health Transformation and the Global Centre for Preventive Health and Nutrition.
