Observing that Pilates had been so effective, a couple of

years later I trained to instruct Mat and Reformer Pilates. Keen for more comprehensive knowledge, 12 years ago I went on to be fully qualified in the Diploma Level Course to Teach Remedial/Clinical Pilates. Registered with the Australian Pilates Method Association as a Level 4 Teacher.

Missing Pilates because of illness or extended holidays can make your body slip backwards but it doesn’t take long to get back on track.

Keeping up with some exercise does make a difference even if it’s just gentle movement.

Joint replacement is massive surgery and the best outcomes are from people who keep the muscles around the joint as strong as possible.

I’ve helped many people over the last 20 years with pre and post op exercises, and it’s great hearing from a clients recent surgery has gone well.

Coming to your sessions really helps but doing exercises at home makes a big difference.

On International Women’s Day I would like highlight Clara Pilates, the wife of Joseph Pilates.

Little is known about her other than she born Anna Clara Zuener in Germany in 1883.

She was originally a nurse or a nursery teacher, and usually wore a nurses uniform when she taught.

In the photo she is wearing her trademark white nurses uniform.

The photo is from a photo shoot for Look magazine in 1956 with Elaine Malbin (pictured with her huge handbag after finishing her workout with Joseph Pilates). The photographer was John Vachon. Image held by the Library of Congress. Thank you to for sharing the image.


Clara met Joe in 1926 while traveling by boat to New York.

Joe may have been the creator behind the Pilates method, but it was Clara who vocalized and clarified how to adapt the exercises to fit each client.

According to many of the Pilates Elders (those teachers who trained directly with Joe), Joe was fairly brisk and abrupt with his instructions and directions, perhaps partially due to the fact that English was not his first language.

It was Clara who often spent the most time with clients, explaining what Joe wanted. She was also a lot more approachable so many preferred to be taught be her.

Following Joe’s death in 1967, Clara continued to teach in the studio until her death in 1977 at age 94.

As per usual with majority of women in the past we know little about them, but this doesn’t make them any less important.

At Pilates because I tailor all the exercises to the individual it doesn’t matter your fitness level, your size, your age, your gender, your ability, or how you learn.

Can’t lie down, that’s fine.

Can’t sit, that’s fine.

Can’t stand, that’s fine.

Can’t get up off the ground, definitely fine.

All you need is a body and a willingness to improve and be consistent. THIS is how you feel stronger, more flexible and better able to move with ease.

Thinking of everyone affected by the Ash Wednesday Bushfires on 16th February 1983.

A number of clients and friends of the studio were involved with the fires.

My thoughts are with you today.

At that time on the 16th February 1983 there were hundreds of separate fires around the state including close to here Cockatoo, Belgrave Heights, Upper Beaconsfield and Warburton.

47 people died
2,676 were injured
8,000 people evacuated
3,700 buildings destroyed
Hundreds of thousands of sheep, cattle and wildlife died.
130,000 firefighters, defense force and volunteers were involved during and in the aftermath.

Ideal you should do 2-3 Pilates sessions per week, sounds great BUT you don’t have to.

I know some studios say you have to but you don’t.

Most of my clients do 1 or 2 times a week, and that’s great, much, much better than none.

Yes, you would make faster improvements but let’s face it, it’s not always practical with time constraints and finances.

BUT, there is DEFINITELY a but try to fit in 3-5 hours a week of moderate intensity exercise.

It can be some of the at home Pilates exercises I give you when you start.

It can be brisk walking, gardening, gym workouts, swimming, running, horse riding, tennis, dancing.

It doesn’t have to be all in one go, just 30-45 minutes a day split into 15 minute chunks.

AND what’s even best you can use ALL your Pilates techniques to get the most out of these movements.

Pilates can help you in your everyday day life, it can make you stronger, more flexible and importantly move with greater ease, ESPECIALLY if the exercises are tailored specifically for YOU!
