The answer is no! It's a common misconception that using Key Word Sign (or other alternative forms of communication) will stop children from talking, but exactly the opposite is true.

A child will always communicate in the way that is easiest for them, and speech is the easiest way of communicating with others because we’re all surrounded by people speaking. Therefore, even if Key Word Sign is used, they will continue to develop speech if that is possible for them.

We also know from research that using Key Word Sign or other forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) will enable a child or adult with communication difficulties to communicate more effectively with others.
