Get to know Sarah, Funeral Director at Guardian Funerals Minchinbury.

What’s something you wish people knew before they ever needed a funeral director?
🔸 That we are a safe place for them to cry, vent, laugh and show all the range of emotions they may experience during their time with us, and that there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

One fact about you that might surprise people.
🔸 I have never had a driving/parking fine or lost a single demerit point.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
🔸 I love spending quality time with my 2 amazing boys by going on bike rides, park visits and all sorts of fun adventures. When they are asleep, I enjoy relaxing in bed, and staying up late with a good book.

What’s your go to coffee order?
🔸 When I need a caffeine hit, just a flat white. Otherwise, I’m a cup of tea kind of girl.

If you weren’t a funeral director, what do you think you would be doing instead?
🔸 All my previous roles have been related to caring or assisting people, which I have found extremely fulfilling. I am not sure what I would be doing exactly, but I do know it would be something along those lines.

What’s one thing people are usually surprised to learn about funeral directors?
🔸 Honestly? People are surprised that we’re actually pretty fun to be around. There’s a stereotype that we’re all sombre and 'Addams Family' in our off-hours, but because we deal with mortality every day, funeral directors usually have a massive appreciation for life. We’re often the ones laughing the loudest at dinner.

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
🔸 Egypt. I have travelled to Egypt before and would love to go back to see the new Egyptian museum in Cairo.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
🔸 In this profession, you’re constantly reminded of how important family is. So when I’m off the clock, I prioritise quality time with my family and friends. Whether we’re just hanging out or just watching a movie, those moments of laughter and connection are what keep me energised and ready to support the families I serve.

One fun fact about you that might surprise people
🔸 I love to knit! I have made jumpers, blankets and babywear.

What helps you connect with families in difficult moments?
🔸 I find that the most powerful tool for connection is intentional silence. In difficult moments, families often feel unheard or overwhelmed by information. By practicing active listening and validating their emotions without immediately trying to 'fix' the situation, it creates a safe space where they feel seen and respected. This builds the trust necessary to move forward together.

What’s your favourite part of your role?
🔸 Helping families create a unique and personal service to celebrate their loved one’s life. We know that no two people are the same, and their farewells shouldn’t be either.

Favourite pizza toppings (and does pineapple belong on a pizza)?
🔸 Mash potato pizza from Western Sydney Pizza (Minchinbury’s best pizza shop!!!) and yes, pineapple belongs on pizza.

If you weren’t a funeral director, what do you think you would be doing instead?
🔸 Community engagement for Cancer Council! After my own diagnosis in 2019, I am extremely passionate about helping others who have, are and will go through their own cancer journey.

Favourite NRL team?
🔸 I grew up a Parramatta fan, but I’m now a Penrith girl much to my dad’s disapproval.

What’s one thing people are usually surprised to learn about funeral directors?
🔸 That we laugh with you, listen to your stories and celebrate your loved one’s lives, just as much as we support your grief.

Get to know Legen, Funeral Director at Guardian Funerals Minchinbury.

What made you choose this job?
🔸I’ve always felt a pull toward roles where I can support people during their most vulnerable moments. I realised that a funeral isn't just about saying goodbye, it’s about honouring a life lived. I wanted to be the person who handles the "how" so families can focus on the "who".

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
🔸Because my work is so emotionally focused, I enjoy things that keep me grounded in the present. I love sports, enjoying nature and family time. It helps me recharge and maintain a healthy perspective on life.

Who's your Favourite NRL team?
🔸Canberra Raiders

If you weren’t a funeral director, what do you think you would be doing instead?
🔸I'd most likely be a Police Officer. I’ve always been drawn to roles that involve serving the community and being there for people during their most critical moments. Whether it's as a funeral arranger or in the police force, I think I’m naturally wired to provide structure and support when things feel chaotic for others.

Get to know Blessing, Location Supervisor for Guardian Funerals Minchinbury.

What’s one thing people are usually surprised to learn about funeral directors?
🔸Sometimes people perceive funeral directors as stoic and composed, and whilst it might appear so on the outside, we feel everything deeply. We listen to your stories and feel all the emotions that come with the loss of a loved one. We feel the heaviness, but we also feel the immense privilege.

Who’s one artist you’ll never skip when they come on?
🔸I can’t choose one, so I’ll choose three lol. The triple threat (in my opinion). Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Adele!

What’s your favourite part of your role?
🔸Knowing that we were able to give a families loved one the farewell they deserve, and just how they would have wanted. I know that sounds cliché, but it really is a huge relief when a family is happy with our services, especially during such a hard time. Sometimes we get it right, and other times we get it wrong, but every day we try our best to be better than the day before.

What’s your favourite TV series?
🔸Any crime documentary. Not a series but I’m sure it counts.

If you weren’t a funeral director, what do you think you would be doing instead?
🔸Anything that involves serving my community behind the scenes. I love that stuff.

Get to know Kathy, Location Manager for Guardian Funerals Minchinbury.

What made you choose this job?
🔸I was working in aged care but over the phone in call centre, and I really missed connecting with people face to face. When I saw the job vacancy, I thought why not, what a great way to use my customer service skills and help people in their time of need.

What’s your favourite TV series?
🔸Pride and Prejudice (BBC production)

What’s your favourite part of your role?
🔸As the leader of this team, my favourite part is my team! They are all such individual people but with the same outlook of genuinely caring for people. To see them all connect with the families we are lucky to help, is the best part of this job.

Favourite pizza toppings (and does pineapple belong on a pizza)?
🔸Olive and anchovies and all the cheese!!! & No pineapple does not belong on pizza

What’s something you wish people knew before they ever needed a funeral director?
🔸When someone dies, I think the best gift you can give yourself is take a little time. Not feel pressured to rush into any decisions. Grieving is such a personal experience and not everyone grieves the same. Give each other space and most of all, love.
