š¾ Diluting Essential Oils for Dogs š¾
When using essential oils topically on your dog, which means applying to their skin or fur, you need to dilute them first in a carrier oil.
Diluting the essential oils not only helps the dog to absorb them quicker and more effectively, but also helps limit the chance of any sensitivities or reactions.
You need to dilute even more for puppies, small dogs and when using certain oils on the Use With Caution list, like the hot oils.
š§Dilution Guidelines.
š¾For puppies and small dogs(under 10kg) use a 0.5% dilution rate. This equates to 1 drop EO to 10ml carrier oil.
š¾For dogs over 10kg you can use up to 3% dilution rate. This is 6 drops EO to 10ml carrier oil.
š¾For oils in the caution list the 0.5% dilution rate is best.
For a carrier oil I like to use fractionated coconut oil, but there are others you can use like olive oil, jojoba oil, almond oil etc.
This is a guideline. Some of the gentle oils you can use more of, but with essential oils, more isn't always better.
And please remember to always observe your pet when using a new oil on them for any sign of distress or sensitivity. It is rare, but all dogs are different, so it's worth keeping an eye on them for a little bit
If you see any unwanted reaction occur, DO NOT attempt to clean oils off with water. Instead, apply more carrier oil to dilute it even further. Water will drive the oils in more.
There are so many benefits to using essential oils topically for your dog when used correctly. Give it a try!
