Why essential oils can be a game-changer for dogs 🐾

If you’re looking for more natural ways to support your dog’s health and wellbeing, essential oils can be a beautiful addition — when they’re used correctly.

Here’s why so many dogs benefit from them 👇

✨ They support the body naturally

Essential oils work with the body, not against it. They can help support calm behaviour, healthy skin, joints, digestion, immunity and emotional balance — without adding to your dog’s toxic load.

✨ Dogs are incredibly scent-driven

A dog’s sense of smell is far more powerful than ours. Because of this, aromatherapy can be especially effective for stress, anxiety, fear, over-arousal and emotional challenges.

✨ Gentle, not harsh

When the right oils are used at the right dilution, they’re gentle on the body while still being effective. This makes them a great option for dogs who are sensitive or don’t tolerate harsh products well.

✨ They allow dogs to self-regulate

With aromatherapy, dogs can be offered choice. Many will instinctively engage with the scents they need and move away from those they don’t — something I absolutely love about this approach.

✨ They support a low-tox lifestyle

Modern dogs are exposed to a huge number of chemicals every day. Essential oils can help reduce the overall chemical burden when used as part of a more natural, low-tox way of caring for your dog.

⚠️ Important to know:

Not all essential oils are safe for dogs, and using them incorrectly can cause harm. This is about dog-specific education, correct oils and proper use.

💚 If you’re curious but unsure where to start, learning how to use essential oils safely for dogs makes all the difference. With the right guidance, they can become a simple, effective part of caring for your dog — without overwhelm or guesswork.

If you’ve ever wondered whether essential oils could help your dog, feel free to reach out or stick around — I share lots of practical, dog-safe education here.

🐾 Diluting Essential Oils for Dogs 🐾

When using essential oils topically on your dog, which means applying to their skin or fur, you need to dilute them first in a carrier oil.

Diluting the essential oils not only helps the dog to absorb them quicker and more effectively, but also helps limit the chance of any sensitivities or reactions.

You need to dilute even more for puppies, small dogs and when using certain oils on the Use With Caution list, like the hot oils.

💧Dilution Guidelines.
🐾For puppies and small dogs(under 10kg) use a 0.5% dilution rate. This equates to 1 drop EO to 10ml carrier oil.

🐾For dogs over 10kg you can use up to 3% dilution rate. This is 6 drops EO to 10ml carrier oil.

🐾For oils in the caution list the 0.5% dilution rate is best.

For a carrier oil I like to use fractionated coconut oil, but there are others you can use like olive oil, jojoba oil, almond oil etc.

This is a guideline. Some of the gentle oils you can use more of, but with essential oils, more isn't always better.

And please remember to always observe your pet when using a new oil on them for any sign of distress or sensitivity. It is rare, but all dogs are different, so it's worth keeping an eye on them for a little bit

If you see any unwanted reaction occur, DO NOT attempt to clean oils off with water. Instead, apply more carrier oil to dilute it even further. Water will drive the oils in more.

There are so many benefits to using essential oils topically for your dog when used correctly. Give it a try!
