New England Belted Galloway Stud was established initially over 20 years ago by Francie MacLean. The stud started on a commercial basis then developed further with the purchase of Stud females from long-standing Belted Galloway stud Midfern in Victoria in a partnership with her late father Stig Magnusson. The stud relocated to a larger picturesque property north east of Tamworth15 years ago. Oakview on the Mulla Creek is made up of 1200 acres of undulating light basalt country. The property comprises native pastures complimented by introduced pasture species such as rye grasses, Lucerne, clovers with forage oats crops. New England Belted Galloway stud runs a modest commercial herd of Belted Galloways combining the excellent attributes of the Belted Galloway along with the Angus breed. Our stud comprises of 50 Stud cows, our herd is self replacing through the expansion of genetics utilizing artificial insemination. The genetics utilized over time have been Australian bulls from Apriash, Longfield, Bringelly and Warialda through to overseas sires such as Aldermere Ajax USA, Mochrum Kingfisher and Park Perseus sourced from Scotland. Long-standing studs have in the past been introduced such as Wombledale and to a limited degree Hawkeshead. For natural joining our bulls are introduced for a 12 week period in late spring and cows are pregnancy tested in autumn, thereby ensuring herd fertility is kept as a high priority. We also run independently a self replacing herd of Black baldy and Angus cows joined within the same time frame to Stud Angus bulls. The stud has previously enjoyed success in royal shows rings, but I have stepped away from showing and my time on the Australian Belted Galloway Association council holding high positions within the executive from 2007 – 2013, and the herd has over the past two years seen a large reduction. I anticipated our newly developed direction would not or ever be direct marketing to the household consumer. We have for some years continued to sell all our Belted Galloway steers and commercial heifers directly to beef companies such as JBS Australia., and they have always graded to Meat Standards Australia requirements. We are a part of JBS Australia’s , ‘Great Southern Beef ‘ range. Great Southern Beef is primarily sourced from British breeds and we are excited to produce beef meeting the exacting standards set. New England Belted Galloway Stud has as part of our requirement and our commitment to supplying our beef has become a part of the JBS Farm Assurance program. The ‘JBS Farm Assurance Program’ fulfils today’s customer expectations that meat be grown safely, responsibly and ethically. It conforms to a very high standard for animal welfare ‘on farm’ and also during transportation and handling. We are committed to deliver the delicious prime restaurant quality meat we all deserve. It is an enduring commitment and growing appreciation you’ll find across the entire supply chain.
