With another month to go before we move into spring, support your immune system with a delicious chicken soup, or bone broth. Slow-cooked chicken soup is a nutrient-rich broth that contains lots of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These nutrients play a crucial role in supporting the immune system's function and overall health.

For those of you who eat meat, chicken is a good source of protein, which is essential for the body to build and repair tissues, including those involved in the immune response. Adequate protein intake is crucial for maintaining a strong immune system.
Varying the vegetables, herbs and spices can make this soup the perfect way to support your immune system, whilst enjoying a delicious and nutritious meal. Some immune supportive ingredients include leek, garlic, ginger and turmeric, which are known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Seaweed flakes are packed with rich nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin A, zinc, selenium, iron, and iodine which will support healthy immune and thyroid function. Additionally, seaweed is high in various antioxidants, including carotenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols. These compounds help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which can benefit the immune system by keeping it balanced and responsive.
Seaweed has also been shown to have anti-viral and anti-microbial properties, enhancing your body's natural defence against harmful pathogens.

Soup is a wonderful way to stay hydrated in the colder months, which is essential for optimal immune function. The liquid content in chicken soup can help keep you hydrated, which supports overall bodily functions, including the immune system.

Sitting down to a warm home cooked bowl of chicken soup is comforting and can aid in stress reduction. Often considered comfort food, studies have shown that we can benefit emotionally from feeling comforted and relaxed by consuming chicken soup

For the time-poor this can be a really simple way to create something delicious, throw it into the slow cooker and get on with your day, the slow cooking process will allow for all the nutrients to be extracted from the bones, and allow the nutrients to remain in the vegetables, herbs and spices due to the lower cooking temperature.

Play around with the flavours, add more garlic or more herbs such as rosemary and oregano if you are fighting off the flu. Add fresh chilli or flakes if you want to spice it up.

Feel free to reach out for a recipe I will happily share one with you!
