One day your baby, the one that today may seem impossible and far from existence.

Will be old enough to hear their story, to hear how badly they were wanted. How deeply they were loved, How often they were wished for and how important their existence is.

Imagine them looking up at you and thanking you for never giving up on them. Even if today it feels impossible. 🤍

Wow such a shock 🙄😂

Wow such a shock 🙄😂

It takes a lot of energy to create life, and scientists are saying it takes significantly more than they originally believed.

Research shows that pregnancy demands 50,000 dietary calories over the course of nine months, 96% of that energy is required entirely from the mother. FYI, that’s roughly 50 pints of Ben & Jerry’s 🍦

Mamas and soon-to-be-mamas? Take a nap—this. is. not. easy!

Mothers involved in the historic Birth Trauma Inquiry say the funding, which is part of an $83 million package, is a "phenomenal" win for parents and babies.

Tonight was amazing!
It was the first time I have ever done a maternity session with a surrogate and expecting parents!
What a special and amazing gift A is able to give this beautiful couple!
This is all I am going to post because they asked to stay private which I totally respect and feel thankful that I am able to share this! What a beautiful celebration of life!

Just a lil appreciation post for my right hand man, Abraham.

When I was pregnant I was worried I wouldn’t be able to love someone as much as I love Abe (sorry Abe you’re definitely second now) but I thank my lucky stars every damn day the universe delivered me you.
You’ve protected me in some of my most vulnerable times, loved me in my darkest hours and continue to take care of our little family.

8.5 years so far and it’s not even close to enough. Watching your face turn grey, I get scared of what life will look like without you. Just writing this gives me a lump in my throat and automatic tears.

You smell so bad sometimes, need antidepressants (how millennial of you) and seriously can’t keep out of our faces omgggg - but I’m so mindful to not take any of it for granted.

I will always believe we don’t deserve dogs but I’m so lucky you adopted me all those years ago (and promise to cherish every little quirk of yours!) 🥰

Oh my gosh - anyone want to do a Canberra overnighter for this? 😍

1 Day workshop with Rhea in Canberra
The UCMS is proud to collaborate with Rhea Dempsey from 'Birthing Wisdom' for an exclusive 1-day workshop in Canberra. This workshop is designed for all - Birth workers, student midwives, couples or singles, Rhea Dempsey brings you insights from her two books 'Birth with Confidence' and 'Beyond the Birth Plan'.

In the morning you will learn about pain and its relationship to 'physiological birth'. Rhea will delve into a range of topics from the distinction between physiological, pathological and psychological pain, the cultural mindset of the epidural, crisis of confidence and the birthing woman's pain attitude, the couple 'relationship dynamic' and pain, midwives' pain paradigm, midwives' working with pain skills, and the magic dance of Oxytocin and Endorphins.

In the afternoon Rhea will delve into some of the deeper psychological themes from her newest book, covering factors contributing to birth trauma, disturbed birth physiology, structural issues and unnecessary interventions, expectations of care and a 'wounding' birth culture, and the impact of the Mother's story and couple relationship dynamics.

Afternoon tea provided, click "Get tickets" to secure your spot today. We understand the nature of birth work, so have a 1 day refund policy.

Please don't hesitate to contact the UCMS on ucmidwiferysociety@gmail.com if you require more information.

When I think about the fact every human on this planet was born from a womb, it blows my mind that there aren’t a million more postpartum services than there are. Food is just one of them.

Good food is medicine. Good food is healing. Initial postpartum is a time of rest and recovery - whilst usually tending to the needs of at least one newborn 24/7. That’s before we even talk about the added fuel a body needs to make milk for their little one.

But of course, we see happy smiling women on TV gloating about their weightloss with them help of pre-ready meals. I’m not saying this doesn’t suit some - or that these products are not also peddled towards men - but it would be a misrepresentation to say the marketing creates an even playing field. The pressure to get our “pre-baby” bodies back or to fit a certain mould/dress/statistic based off archaic science is ever-present.

Why can society oversaturate the dieting market with nutrient lacking crap - but we can’t get our s**t together to have at least one kick-ass, go-to meal service for wholesome, decent postpartum food? I know so many little private businesses out there fighting the good fight - but the dream to become mainstream must seem so far fetched when mothers (and parents) are consistently left by the wayside.

We need to step up in so many areas and the work of child-rearing should be valued, like, I dunno, 500000 times more than it is?

Society screams “Hey let’s praise this new mum for fitting into those pre-pregnancy jeans (we just grew a human - why can’t we be granted the change in our bodies?!) but pay absolutely no mind in perhaps assisting her with her basic self-care…which is also ensuring the wellbeing of her child/ren.”

I have my cranky feminist pants on today but I feel so lucky to have this little community that I know get it, because f**k. It’s disheartening sometimes.

A positive birth experience is more than how you birth.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Amy virtually (she’s from my hometown – shout out Geetroit.) Amy got in touch with me wanting a VBAC – short for vaginal birth after caesarean. Amy had kickass support in her partner, Brad and bestie, but she wanted to educate herself some more before stepping into the birth space once again. ✨That’s where I came in✨

Debriefing Amy’s second birth – she said she had ‘zero regrets’ and that she’d walked away having the ‘best birth experience’ EVEN using the word ‘perfect’ at one point. She’d gotten to do everything she wanted to do; she felt in control the whole time and with the help of her sidekicks, had successfully managed to advocate for herself and make informed choices when needed.

Amy’s beautiful baby boy ended up making his entrance via c-section; yet Amy still had an empowering, positive birth experience. A contrast to her first, where her partner was left to watch on in the corner, with little insight given to either Amy or Brad as to what was unfolding.

I am all for untouched birth. I’ll admit I’m biased in that department BUT it simply doesn’t suit everyone, it doesn’t suit every situation and it isn’t always an option. What SHOULD be a non-negotiable is not only feeling like you’ve been involved in the who, what, when, why and how – but also like you actually got to run the show.

It’s your damn birth, your damn body and your damn baby. Plans can change and emergencies happen, but that shouldn’t mean that your autonomy goes out the window.

I truly believe that an amazing birth comes down to just that: autonomy. With enough knowledge, confidence and support - a positive birth experience does not have to come down to HOW you birthed your baby but instead IF you were able to steer the ship.

Congratulations to and Brad on the birth of Master Lemmy - and my sincerest applause for a helluva job steering that ship 🥹😉🧡
