Gippsland Latrobe Aboriginal Advocacy and Support

Gippsland Latrobe Aboriginal Advocacy and Support Empowering Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people to achieve their goals. We can give you all of the tools to make NDIS work for you.

Support Connection
Empowering people and creating connection to community and services is at the heart of what we do at GLAAS. Our Support Connection service is the first step for people living with disabilities or their carers to connect with support networks, groups, activities, and Elders within the Aboriginal community, as well as connect directly with NDIS service providers. Support Coordination and Advocacy
GLAAS is here to help you make the most out of what’s available to you through the NDIS. Our team can help you put together a plan, teach you how to navigate the system and talk to service providers, connect you with providers who can help, and more. If you’ve already started looking at NDIS but aren’t sure what to do next, this is the service you need. Social & Community Participation
We don’t just want to help you survive. We want you to thrive and get the most out of life. One of the most important things we do is bring people together, and give people living with disabilities a chance to get out, get social, and participate in the community. We can put you together with people who share your interests, or who want to do the same activities. Cleaning & Personal Care
As a registered NDIS service provider, we can help with direct supports, too. We want to help you live as independently as possible, and get on top of everything you need to keep things together day-to-day. Whether you need a hand with the mopping or vacuuming, the laundry or washing up, or help getting to the shops, GLAAS can give you that extra bit of help. Cultural Competency Consulting

GLAAS recognises that culturally competent practice across the disability sector must
be supported and encouraged. Through our consulting and collaboration we aim to remove confusion across the disability sector, address barriers to access for First Nation Australians and provide practical resources, knowledge and expertise to assist mainstream providers to start on the continuum of cultural competence.

How to Survive the Heat:

Older people, people with a pre-existing medical condition, pregnant women, young children and babies are most at risk.

• Drink plenty of water. Always take a bottle with you.

• Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, adults or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.

• Keep cool. Seek out air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics.

• Plan ahead. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.

• Check-in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, older people, children and babies, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.

• Call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 606 024 or see your doctor if you are unwell. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

We're absolutely thrilled to share the incredible news about our latest initiative – We have a deadly new ELDER CARE SUPPORT service to help connect Elders and people over 50 in our Community with the care and services they need.

We understand it's hard and confusing trying to access the government’s aged care and support services and we know many of our Elders and older mob are missing out. Here at GLAAS we now have a specially trained Elder Care Support Connector who knows and understands our people in our Community.

Our Elder Care Support Connector can arrange to come and meet you – at your home or wherever you feel safe and comfortable – and with your family or carer too if you prefer – and there’s no cost to you or your family. We can even come and pick you up for our yarns. When you meet the Elder Care Support Connector – you can yarn to them about those things that would help make you feel more supported in your home – maybe some help with your cleaning, shopping or cooking or some help with more personal care – it’s up to you.

Our Elder Care Support Connector then does all the work to make sure you are connected to the aged care services and support you need. The Elder Care Support Connector is your go-to person for understanding, navigating, and accessing essential aged care services.

How Can You Get Involved?
1. Spread the Word: Share this post with your friends, family, and community members to ensure everyone is aware of the Elder Care Support Connector and the services it offers.

2. Share Your Story: Send us a private message if you have a positive story to share about how your aged care services have helped you. Your experiences can be a source of encouragement and enlightenment for others.

3. Connect with Us: If you or someone you know could benefit from the Elder Care Support Connector, reach out to our team. We're here to assist and guide you through the process.

Let's join hands to ensure that our elders receive the care and support they deserve. Together, we can make a positive impact on the aging journey of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
