Play is essential for child development and a key element in occupational therapy.
There are many types of play.
- Gross motor play or active play is play using the whole body ( jump, run, roll, skip, climb, throw balls)
- Fine motor play is activities using your hands (threading, drawing, cutting, and turning pages of a book).
- Sensory play (play with sand, water, mud), visual perceptual play (playing with puzzles, mazes, card games) and auditory play (listening games, I spy) and pretend play (dressing up, creating play scenes).
Play involves repetition of experience, enjoyment, exploration. experimentation and imitation
Children who find it difficult to play or cannot play usually do not understand play behaviour when they see it.
