One of our speech pathologists started the week off with some fun, because we know that communication starts with connection, and sometimes, like this morning, that connection begins with a light-up spinner!

This beautiful child was having a hard day so we didn’t start with words or questions. We started with curiosity.

We watched the lights, shared glances and smiles, took turns, made sounds, then talked and laughed together.

No pressure. No prompting. Just shared joy.

As neurodiversity-affirming therapists, we know that authentic connection and communication grow when we feel safe, seen, and connected with no pressure to produce neurotypical social exchanges!

Would you like speech pathology support that fosters and prioritises authentic communication and social skills?

This picture is an absolute lie.

I have been posting about authenticity this last week - but this picture is anything but authentic.

It depicts my daughter (with the hair and sunnies adapted for privacy) and me sitting outside a classroom happily the day before school started to 'ease her anxiety' about going to high school.

In reality, my daughter is not ok and neither am I.

I took this photo after a 30-minute extremely dysregulated period of her getting out of the car to even walk through the gate. She had been in tears and so had I.

We took this photo to show her dad how courageous she is, but as I looked at this picture, it made me think about the masks we wear.

It made me think that my beautiful daughter, like so many of us AuDHDer females, put on a smile to pretend they are ok... even when we are not.

Even when our anxiety and sensory overwhelm is so extreme, but we pretend to be ok, despite the impact it has on our mental and physical health and wellness - to fit in, to not appear 'different' or to attempt to reduce 'embarrassment.'

Even when you feel that you don't have the strength or energy to keep going, keep advocating or even get up in the morning.

As our children transition back to school last week or this coming week, remember that they are not always ok... even if they have a big smile on their face.

And sometimes - neither are their parents.

How can you help?

1. Give your child the space and time to just relax after school.

2. Become 'Neuro Curious' and notice how you can change the environment around the child to make them feel more comfortable.

Allow them to wear sunglasses to class, or a hat, OR don't force them to use their 'mouth words' to communicate.

3. Don't tell them it will "be ok" - because to them it isn't. Instead, tell them you are there for them at any time, and ALL of their feelings are valid.

4. Remember, that a smile and compliance, is not always the sign of a happy child.

Our Active Connection Club is starting soon!
Don't miss out!

We are SO excited about our Active Connection Club!

This club is for neurodivergent children who LOVE to move their body, be active and want to achieve their social, movement and communication goals!

This Club is for Children aged 5-8 (Kinder-Year 3) who want to build connections with other neurodivergent children and be active while doing it!

Our group is a little bit different though.

Each child will also bring along a parent or carer to participate in the club activities. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents/carers to get in some exercise, and spend special time with their children, all while their children are achieving their movement, social and communication goals.

This group is filling fast - and is capped at 8 children and parent/carer pairs, to make sure we can provide individualised supports and help achieve your goals.

Our group is run by Eddie (who is trained as an Exercise Physiologist) and Azura (who is a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist).

There is no "one right way" to play. The very definition of play is "to engage in something for enjoyment!"

Whether it’s ripping up paper into little squares, playing with toys, organising objects by colour, imagining your own unique worlds or lining items up - it’s all play - and it's all okay!

Play helps us explore our creativity, learn to problem-solve, express emotions, figure out how the world works, and just have fun. Playing alone, next to someone or sharing activities with someone are all valid forms of play!

There are no rules when it comes to play!

Our photo? It shows the results of an engaging session that included fun, authentic play that incorporated two intense interests of garbage trucks and tearing up paper!
