🤷♀️ What is Whooping Cough?
Whooping Cough is a highly infectious bacterial disease, with infection rates currently surging in children across Australia. It can cause:
- Severe bouts of coughing that can cause rib fractures and ruptures of small blood vessels, coughing for up to 3 months
- Pneumonia, seizures and brain damage in infants
🛡️ How do I protect myself and my loved ones from Whooping Cough?
Vaccination is the best protection against this disease. The dTpa combination vaccine helps prevent diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (Whooping Cough).
👨👩👧👦 Who should get vaccinated?
The National Immunisation Program (NIP) Schedule recommends:
- Children have their vaccination at 2, 4, 6 and 18 months, and four years of age.
- Adolescents have a booster dose at 12-13 years
- Pregnant women are vaccinated between 20 and 32 weeks in each pregnancy
- Adults who are in contact with infants less than 6 months old, or wish to reduce their likelihood of becoming ill, are vaccinated if they have not had the vaccine in the previous 10 years.
