Congrats to Mike hitting 10 weeks of washing cars. With very few supported employment options in his local area we helped Mike start his own little business washing cars for family, friends, neighbours and anyone locally who wanted their car washed - Car Wash By Mike was born!

His employment mentor Ben (Formerly owner of Newy Burger Co) gave him an incentive of a personal burger making session once Mike reached a milestone of 10 weeks and today was that day!

Hi all,

We offer a service which helps mentor people with disabilities to gain employment.

It’s not just putting people in a vacancy and hoping for the best it’s connecting empathetic and understanding business owners and employers with people who genuinely want to work.

We are currently working with a lady who is based in Aberglasslyn, she has a vision impairment and is seeking casual work. She has a fantastic background in retail with a great capacity to work and has experience from Woolworths, Spotlight and Franklins.

As part of our journey with those we work with we will assist them to transition into employment and offer support to those in the initial stages of employment to help them transition into the role and facilitate learning any new skills that may be required.

If you feel you may have an opportunity that would be a good fit we would love to hear from you.

Thank you to everyone who donated. Thank you to all the rad people of Team Newy raising over $50,000 which equates to 500 cancer research hours at .

Lastly a thank you to everyone who got behind the Waddingham boys who did Surfeb in their dad’s name to honour his years of commitment to doing Surfeb. They raised just over $27,000 and we know he would be so proud ❤️

Posted • Today is Rare Disease Awareness Day!

For those new here, I have a rare muscle disease, as do my mother and my son Cooper. I spent many years in and out of hospital, being told there was nothing wrong with me and that I was making things up when I couldn’t get out of bed or walk properly (just a couple of the many symptoms.)
Fast forward to being 35 years old, with a 5 year old son, and life changed… I got a call from Cooper’s specialist saying the tests are back, we know what it is…
You have a RYR1 congenital muscle disease. The emotions that came with the diagnosis were a rollercoaster ride. Excited, relieved and validated, but also frustrated and sad, realising just what this means. The thought that I gave this to my son was really heartbreaking.

Did you know that 1 in 10 people are living with a rare disease? Awareness and knowledge about rare diseases is the key. There are 300 million people worldwide living with a rare disease, all with stories and struggles of their own.

As you may know we are often putting the callout to local businesses in Newcastle and the Hunter to assist us in employing people with disabilities or as we like to frame it ‘Different abilities’.
We feel strongly about highlighting those owners/employers that give people a chance. We are super appreciative that local wine maker has given a chance to one of the people we have been building employment capacity with.
Congrats to Greg for securing his first job after leaving school last year!

If you are heading to the Hunter please support wineries like this one who support the community.

Side note Usher has long supported any of the fundraising we have been involved in over the years often the first to put his hand up.

Another side note you won’t find a better cheese and charcuterie option than here!
