✨ OT Sparks | Session 2 ✨
Collaborative Approaches to Health & Participation in Intellectual Disability
People with intellectual disability experience significant and ongoing health inequities.
Medical issues are often under-recognised, communication differences can obscure early warning signs, and sensory or environmental factors may compound functional vulnerability. In this context, occupational therapists are frequently the first to notice subtle but meaningful changes - in function, participation, behaviour, or carer systems.
Session 2 of OT Sparks focuses on strengthening collaborative, holistic approaches to health and participation for people with intellectual disability.
This session integrates occupational therapy reasoning with medical insight from rehabilitation physician Dr Liz Thompson, supporting participants to:
• recognise early indicators of health and functional change
• understand how unmet health needs may present as functional or behavioural shifts
• strengthen clinical reasoning at the interface of health, disability, and participation
• collaborate more effectively with medical professionals and support systems
• support participation while navigating complexity, risk, and vulnerability
Rather than working in parallel, this session emphasises working together - bringing medical and occupational perspectives into meaningful, coordinated care.
