πŸ™‹πŸ»πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸΌBecoming a new dad can be both exciting and overwhelming. It's natural to have questions about pregnancy, childbirth, and fatherhood. πŸ€°πŸ»πŸ“š 🧠 Research has demonstrated that consuming alcohol during pregnancy can alter the brain and behavioural development of a developing foetus. The current advice from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is that β€œthere is no safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy”.πŸ·πŸ‘ŽπŸ» πŸ’‘However, did you know that πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸΌbreastfeeding mother’s who consume alcohol may also be placing their babies at risk?πŸ§ͺπŸ“–Recent evidence suggests that up to 60% of Australian breastfeeding mothers consume alcohol (Perez et.al). Though more research is needed, the evidence from studies thus far seems to suggest that babies consuming ethanol through contaminated breast milk show a reduction in 🧠brain weights, body weights, and growth trajectories. It’s a sobering message of the impact of alcohol on developing babies and there is sure to be more we can learn to help our babies thrive.πŸ‘ΆπŸ»πŸ’š

πŸ€°πŸ½πŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Fear of giving birth is very real. If you are someone who experiences β€˜Tokophobia’ then it may be impacting your pregnancy journey or plans to have a baby.πŸ‘Ό Tokophobia is a pathological fear of pregnancy and childbirth that can lead to avoidance of childbirth. There are two types of tokophobia: primary and secondary. Primary tokophobia affects women who have never given birth, while secondary tokophobia occurs in women who have given birth and is considered a form of post-traumatic stress disorder.

🩺 Symptoms of tokophobia can include sleep disturbances, panic attacks, nightmares, and avoidance behaviours.

🌎 Some evidence suggests that globally the incidence of tokophobia could be as high as 22% of pregnant women. More research is needed to understand the condition and the best treatment methods. If you’ve been avoiding pregnancy because it makes you overly anxious or fearful or if you are pregnant and you are experiencing depression, anxiety, insomnia, or an eating disorder discuss it with your GP or obstetrician πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈto determine the best solution.πŸ“²

πŸ’š πŸŽ—οΈIs your reproductive system telling you something ? Most gynaecological cancers have no screening programme, so noticing symptoms and getting them checked is crucial to early diagnosis and treatment. πŸ”It’s clear that early detection often leads to overall better outcomes.πŸ“š β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹πŸ–οΈThere are five major gynaecological cancers affecting cervix, womb, o***y, va**na and vulva.πŸ’β€β™€οΈ Symptoms vary but the most common are bloating, bleeding between periods or after s*x, and changes in bowel habits. The best thing is to check with your GP. You may be referred to a gynaecologist for further investigation and treatment. πŸ©ΊπŸ“²

🀰🏻Having a baby can be πŸ’œbeautiful and stressful all at once.πŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™€οΈ The combined effect of hormonal changes experienced during pregnancy and the upcoming birth can seem overwhelming. That's why Mothers need special care too. πŸŒΈπŸ’†β€β™€οΈ Here are some tips to help you worry less, and enjoy your pregnancy more. β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹βœ… Check in with yourself. Being sensitive to the signs of anxiety is key to reducing or removing the stressor.β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹βœ… Establishing a regular calming routine of relaxation techniques, yoga, πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ, exercise, or mindfulness may help to remove the stimulus that leads to stress.
βœ… Check your assumption. πŸ‘ΌπŸΌSometimes talking to friends, family or your obstetric team can help to keep things in perspective, especially when unforeseen events arise.🩺
βœ… Stay connected. If you are feeling isolated, particularly if solo, reach out to friends or your clinical team to discuss your fears and concerns. Often, worries evaporate when you are reassured by sound obstetric advice. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ“²
